History in Year 6 (Black History Month)

As our History unit on World War 2 comes to an end, we were very lucky to look at a collection of artifacts provided by our Governor, Mrs Rowley. Her father fought in World War 2 and we had a very interesting lesson learning about his role, as well as looking at his medals and photographs that he took during this time. One particular photograph that we found was of the Berlin 1936 Olympic Stadium. As part of Black History Month, we then learned all about Jesse Owens and his five gold medals and bravery at this time. Some of us enjoyed sharing our learning with Mrs Thomas.

PE on Monday

Please can children in Year 6 come into school on Monday in school uniform so that they are dressed in uniform for school photographs. They can wear trainers, rather than school shoes, for PE in the afternoon.

Many thanks,

The Year 6 Team

Get involved in squash

Squash Stars Promo Leaflet (A5)

You may have seen that recently that the government has unveiled its new sport strategy, which aims to get millions more active. The government has set a target of increasing participation across the nation by getting a further 3.5 million people physically active by 2030. The new strategy follows figures from Sport England’s Active Lives survey which indicates that 53% of children and young people are not currently meeting the guidance of taking part in at least 60 minutes of activity per day.

The government is aiming to get over one million children more active, and in a bid to drive participation amongst young people England Squash has committed to continuing its primary programme for participation amongst young people, Squash Stars.

In partnership with England Squash, local sporting facilities across the country are committing to help children in the area get more active, through squash. Since 2022, Squash Stars has provided thousands of young people across the country with the affordable and accessible means of physical activity, as part of a programme which is aimed at not only introducing children to the sport but getting them active in the process.

Squash Stars is open to young people aged between 5-9 with those taking taught the fundamental skills needed to play squash, with expert coaches helping them improve hand-eye coordination and all-round physical literacy, as well as working on important life skills like resilience and teamwork.

In your area, Squash Stars is being delivered at Shropshire Squash Club.

Swimming on Friday (Miss Jones only)

On Friday, along with their normal swimming kits, please can your child bring a T-shirt and shorts  in a plastic bag. This is in order to take part in the water safety element of our swimming teaching.

Many thanks,

The Year 6 Team

Times Tables in Year 6

Over the next few weeks, Year 6 will be looking at applying their knowledge of times tables in order to help them solve more challenging questions. It is therefore important that all children can rapidly recall their times tables facts. Below are some links to some games which could be used to support this area of their learning. All children also have access to times tables rockstars.

Many thanks for your support.
