Year 3 Resources

Welcome to Year 3!

The staff working across Year 3 in 2018 – 2019 are:

Miss Gears and Mr Pharo

Mr Bevan, Mrs Thomas – Teaching Assistants

Mr Irvine – Sports coach

Mrs Lefroy – French teacher

Morning routines

We will build on the independence that your child gained when they were in Year Two and expect them to come into class on their own. They will need to hang up their coat and bag on their named peg and if they have bought a packed lunch they can go and put it on the class trolley in the corridor. ERIC (Everyone Reading In Class) time will then take place where children will be expected to carry out a silent reading activity while the class teacher listens to individual children read. Children in Miss Gears’ class will access the My Cognition App every morning.

Home/ school communication:

We are excited about learning alongside your child and aim to involve you in their learning every step of the way! You may receive notes or ways to help us support in their learning. ‘Home/School Communication Books’ will be checked daily – please use these to note anything you want us to celebrate or check! Staff will be available briefly after school, but if you wish to speak in more detail, staff will be more than happy to arrange a time which is convenient for everyone.

PE days:

Both Year 3 classes have PE on a Tuesday and Thursday. We are happy to keep kit in school until half term, when we will send it home.

Indoor PE kit is needed on a Tuesday, outdoor kit on a Thursday.

Indoor kit: Navy / Black shorts, White T shirt

Outdoor kit: Navy / Black shorts, Navy / Black joggers if cold, White T shirt, Warm jumper, black pumps.

PE days:

For Autumn 1, Year 3 will be having Forest Schools on a Friday afternoon.

Homework:

Spellings are handed out to the children on a Friday, to be tested the following Friday. They will be linked to the spelling rules which your child is learning that week. The spellings will be recorded in the back of the homework books, so that you can see which spellings they were able to spell and which they need more help with!

It will really help your child to make excellent progress if you read nightly with them. We will change books frequently, in line with how often your child is reading. Children are encouraged to continue to change their books by themselves.

The children will be given a times table to practise each week. This will be tested every Thursday. Resources will be provided to help you to practise this together at home on a Friday.

End of the day routines:

Children in Miss Gears’ class will be collected from the double doors that lead directly on to the playground near the parent gate. Mr Pharo’s class will be collected from the furthest door on the decking area at the front of the school. Please note that we can only send children home with parents, unless we have received a message via the office or note in the Home/ school communication record.

Curriculum

English: The children in Year 3 will be reading a range of stories, such as The Snow Dragon, and The Three Little Pigs. We will also be looking at how we write non-fiction texts and will link this to our History and Science learning on The Stone Age and Rocks and Soils. We would appreciate when you read with your child, if you can ask them questions about the text to check for their understanding.

Maths: During this term, we will be focusing on your child’s understanding of multiplication and division. We will be counting in 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 8s, 10s, 50s and 100s so lots of practice at home on this will help! The children will also be learning to match numbers with their names and work on their skills in adding and subtracting.

Science: To begin with, we will be learning about Rocks and Soils and how they can be grouped and changed, and whether they are natural or man-made. We will also be carrying out investigations. We will then move on to explore Forces and Magnets.

Topic: Our topic this term is “Stone Age to Iron Age”. We will begin by looking at the Stone Age and move on to the Iron Age in the second half term. During RE we will consider “who is my neighbour?”

If you have any questions, please feel free to chat with any member of the Year 3 team, who will try and help you! We are really looking forward to learning alongside you and your children this year.
