“Early years is the starting point…it is the bedrock of everything to come.”
Newdale Nursery is part of Newdale Primary School and opened in September 2012 (previously Sure Starters Nursery). The nursery is located at the front of the school and offers an ideal environment for children to develop in safe and nurturing surroundings. There are separate areas for younger toddlers (Ladybugs) and pre-school (Mighty Oaks), catering for children from two to four years of age. There is a secure outside area for both Ladybugs and for Mighty Oaks children to enjoy outdoor play.
Communication and Language and high quality interactions with the child are at the heart of everything we do, with a view to developing spoken and reception language and vocabulary.
We have the expertise of Newdale Primary School’s Early Years Lead and teacher who plans our Pre-School Curriculum through the Foundation Stage and Early Learning Goals. We also have an early years teacher running the nursery in both the morning and the afternoon sessions.
Effective learning is a mix of different approaches: children learn through play (play-based curriculum), by adults modelling, and through guided learning and direct teaching. Children in the early years learn through whole class and group work, where practitioners teach new knowledge and guide their learning. Our practitioners carefully organise enabling environments for the 7 areas of learning, both inside and out for high-quality play. Newdale staff continually interact to support and extend children’s learning.
The prime areas form a significant part of a child’s daily activities at Newdale. They are weaved into daily opportunities through purposeful learning opportunities and interactions set up by the adults.
Strong links have been carefully made from EYFS through to Y1 and beyond. We know that knowledge builds on knowledge and that children learn by making connections: ‘Early Years is the starting point…it is the bedrock of everything to come!’
Our welfare and safeguarding arrangements are robust, including risk assessments and safety checks.
The Nursery is open during term time only, from 7:45am through to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. We close for five staff training days over the school year. Exact term dates are published in the nursery calendar each year.
Nursery bookings
For changes to sessions / cancellations, we require two weeks notice.
Wrap Around Care
We offer a breakfast club session 7:45am – 8:30am.
The nursery also operates an after school club session from 3:20pm – 6:00pm, Monday to Friday. Children who have attended this session are collected from the rear Mighty Oaks garden.
Uniform
If parents wish, uniform is available to purchase at Baker & Sons (located on the High Street in Wellington) but is not mandatory.
Book bags
We encourage the children to choose a book each week and share it with family members. We ask that children change their books every Monday (or the first day they are in attendance for the week). We also ask that parents sign books in and out, so we can keep a record of borrowed books.
Tree-iffic Tuesdays:
Forest Learning, and Cooking… On a Tuesday we offer these exciting and active sessions, so we ask for children to wear comfortable clothing.
In the Forest Learning sessions, the children are taken outside to enjoy our fantastic nature area. We will provide waterproofs, however, we do need you to provide wellies, coats, gloves and scarfs please.
Cooking sessions are carried out in the Nursery on a rota basis. By the end of the year, all children will have experienced everything on offer.
Arriving and collecting children from Nursery
Nursery session in the morning starts at 8.30am -11.30am and the afternoon session runs from 12.20pm – 3.20pm. We kindly ask you to wait outside the main entrance for Ladybugs children; and the rear nursery garden gate (follow the Delivery sign) for Mighty Oaks children until the Nursery administrator opens the gates. This is the same process when collecting your child, at the end of the session.
We would ask you to make sure you speak to your child’s key person when dropping off and picking up your child to ensure they have acknowledged you and your child and passed on any key messages.
Toys and belongings
We would also like to ask that children keep their toys at home as we can not take responsibility for any broken items. However, we do appreciate that on occasion children may want to bring an item in to share with the group. Please let us know if this is the case.
Lunch time
Children who are staying for lunch can bring in a packed lunch. Alternatively, a hot school lunch is available at a cost of £2.70. This is to be paid via your child’s Parent Pay account.
Changing bags
Please can you provide a change of clothes in a named draw string bag. This will be left on your child’s peg in case they become messy after participating in activities or have an accident.
Car park
Please note the car park is only available to staff and disabled badge holders.
Policies
You can read Nursery’s policies on our policy page, entitled, ‘Nursery Policies’.
