Children’s Roles & Responsibilities

School Parliament

‘The school parliament is prominent and listened to. It meets regularly with pupils, leaders and governors and discusses issues of importance. For example, pupils made a decision to collect bottle tops to raise money for a water safety charity. One pupil said, ‘we are improving our whole world, not just our school’

Ofsted May 2023

Our School Parliament meets regularly with Mrs Morrow. Each class has two representatives. The School Parliament deliver regular assemblies and work with the governors and staff every term to share and discuss their thoughts on how to develop and improve the school.

 Who are School Parliament?

Newdale School Parliament is made up of pupils from Year 1 through to Year 6, who are elected by their peers to represent the views of all pupils, and to work with the senior leadership team to continue to improve our school.

Our School Parliament Executive Committee consists of a Chairperson, Vice-chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer from Year 5 and Year 6. Our School Parliament is made up of 3 subcommittees: Eco, Charity and Safeguarding.

What are our aims?

  • The members will raise the profile and promote Newdale Primary School’s Aims and Vision Statement.
  • The members will have a responsibility to help the school become more environmentally friendly.
  • The members will have the responsibility to think of ways to help the local community become a safer, healthier and more peaceful place to live in.
  • The members will promote the voice of the school community.
  • The members will support charities and help raise funds for school event

The Role of School Parliament

Each year, after an electoral campaign and polling day, every class will elect representatives from their year group; they will be members of the school parliament for the whole of the academic year. The elections take place at the beginning of the school year in the Autumn term.

Each representative follows a set of principles:

  • To make sure that our school is a safe and happy place for children.
  • To make sure that children have a place to voice their concerns.
  • To encourage all children in the school to suggest improvements.
  • To make sure any suggestions or concerns are listened to and acted upon

What makes our School Parliament successful?

  • Regular meetings
  • School Parliament members form Year 1 to Year 6 to make sure have we a whole school voice.
  • Good communication between representatives and their class members
  • The school Parliament has a noticeboard where the constitution and minutes of meetings are displayed, and important information is posted

Here is a current project that School Parliament are working on:

Collecting food for local food banks

Raising money for Healthy Lifestyles Week through movie nights

Safeguarding Champions

‘Pupil safeguarding champions play an active role in making sure all pupils are safe. They talk to pupils, leaders and governors regularly about safeguarding issues.’

Ofsted May 2023

We have a dedicated team of children who work alongside staff and governors to ensure our school is safe. Part of their role is being available around school, including breaks and lunchtimes, to help others.

Once a half term, the Safeguarding Champions go on a health and safety walk with Miss Cook and the Site Manager to ensure the school grounds continue to be safe.

On a regular basis, the Safeguarding Champions deliver assemblies on different aspects of safety such as road safety and E-safety.

During their regular meetings, the team come up with ways to continue to improve the school so that children continue to feel happy and safe.

In the past, our Safeguarding Champions have been on trips to the local police and fire station to learn more about dangers, minimising risks and helping others.

An easy way to spot a Safeguarding Champion is by their red school jumper!

Playground Friends

Some children from Years 4,5 & 6 have received training to become a playground friend after filling out an application form and having an interview.  Their role is to help children on the playground have an enjoyable playtime. They provide a variety of games and activities and also assist children to the first aid room if needed. Children can easily spot a playground friend as they wear white caps to stand out.
