Our Visit to the Post Box!

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who sent a stamp into school this week, it is much appreciated by the children and the staff!

This morning, the children took great pride in writing a postcard about their visit to Dudley Zoo and Castle. This afternoon, we went on a ‘post box adventure’ to post the children’s postcards. The children had a fantastic time and were very excited to post their very own postcard!

Keep those beady eyes out for the postcards arriving at your house.

Year 1 Trip To Dudley Zoo and Castle

Tomorrow, we are off to Dudley Zoo and Castle.

In the morning, please drop your child in the usual place at 8:20am. Your child will need to have a small backpack with their water bottle, and packed lunch if you have opted for this. Your child must have a waterproof coat with them! Your child will be walking around the zoo and castle all day so may wish to wear suitable trainers instead of their school shoes.

We will return in time for normal dismissal.

Stamps Needed!

This half term, we have read the story ‘The Jolly Postman’ by Janet and Allan Alhberg. The children have loved learning all about the life of a postman and are working so hard with their writing in literacy.

To finish the unit, we would love for the children to write a postcard to post home about their trip to Dudley Zoo and Castle. Please can you provide your child with a stamp to attach to their postcard so that we can take the children to the post box to post. Please can you send the stamp into school with your child by Wednesday 22nd May.

We know the children will relish the opportunity to write to you and to post their own postcard home – it will give them a real, exciting purpose to their writing.

Thank you so much for your continued support,

Year 1 Team

World Book Day in Miss Buckingham’s Class!

The children looked amazing and had a wonderful day today!

Across Year 1 and Year 2, we split into houses and visited each teacher to take part in a different Julia Donaldson themed activity – we made a moving book cover, we made paper dolls, we created maps of a story setting and we explored what floats and sinks.

This afternoon, we did ‘Stop, drop and read!’. We all chose somewhere in our classroom or outdoor area to get comfy and read.

We also made our own books, made reading dens, made playdough dinner for the Gruffalo, built an outdoor reading space and were inspired by athletes in books to be sporty outside.

What a busy day! We can’t wait to hear what book the children chose with their voucher.

Geography in Miss Buckingham’s Class

The children were amazing at learning the compass points this week. We discussed that we always have to find North on our compass, and learnt rhymes to help us remember the four points.

We went outside with our own compasses and drew what we could see under each direction! We were brilliant geographers!

The children loved making their compasses and asked me if they could make another at home – those who wanted to have bought home a template today!

(Write the compass points on – N,E,S,W. Orientate the compass to face North. Open the flaps and draw what you can see in each direction)

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Buckingham and Mrs Goodwin

Therapy Dog Visit

Next week, Year 1 are extremely lucky to have Puppy and Friends Academy coming into school to teach them how to care for a dog. The visit will take place on Wednesday 28th February in the morning and will be in our classroom. They will be bringing an accredited therapy dog with them (a super friendly, calm golden retriever).

The children will not need to bring anything different with them, and will still come to school in their uniform.

Please can you let us know through your child’s reading diary if your child is scared of dogs or has any sensitivities to their fur.

Thanks, Year 1 Team

This week, we have made snail sculptures with clay and have painted them too – they look amazing and we can’t wait to bring them home to show you :)

We have had a Great Fire of London workshop where we did some brilliant acting and wowed our visitors with our knowledge.

We even wrote diary entries as Samuel Pepys – did you know he buried his cheese and wine?!?

We developed our BeeBot skills and confidently programmed them to move around an Enchanted Forest!

We finished our half term with some valentines day and pancake day crafts, as well as made some delicious bread which we were very proud of.

Have a wonderful holiday with plenty of rest, ready for another busy term!

Love from Miss Buckingham and Mrs Goodwin
