A Busy Week in Year 1!

It has been another busy week in Year 1 this week!

We have been learning about The Great Fire of London in History this week. We’ve imagined we are bakers on Pudding Lane, civilians in London in 1666 trying to stop the fire and Samuel Pepys writing his diary.

Our bird feeders had set, so we went and placed them on the trees around Base Camp to feed the birds during the cold weather.

In Forest School, we created our own sculptures using natural materials inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.

In Computing, we worked collaboratively and practised programming commands to move a BeeBot around a map.

In Science, we sorted different items into groups based on the material that they were. We also used a range of adjectives to describe the properties of each material.

In Maths, we have been learning to count in our 2’s and our 10’s. Please ask your child to keep chanting these around the house, practice makes perfect! In Literacy, we have been reading Paddington and using exciting vocabulary to retell the story of him at the palace. Here is another Paddington story you might like to listen to. 🐻 Paddington at the Circus | Paddington Bear Kids Book Read Aloud (youtube.com)

Our Wonderful Winter Walk!

This morning, Year 1 went on a wonderful, wintery Nature Walk looking for signs of winter and spotting different wildlife and habitats.

We observed lots of different birds, so when we returned to school, we worked as a team to create lots of bird feeders to hang around Newdale’s outdoor areas.

Year 1 Miss Buckingham’s Class

Year 1 have enjoyed an exciting end to the term!

We loved learning the songs and dancing our way through the Nativity!

Today, we have been busy with all of the festive fun at Newdale! We had an exciting snowball fight and enjoyed snacks, games and a movie at our Christmas Party!

Have a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Miss Buckingham and Mrs Goodwin

Year 1 Polar Express Trip

Next week, on Wednesday 6th December, Year 1 are off to Telford Steam Railway to ride the Polar Express and we cannot wait!

Please send your child to school with warm pyjamas and a dressing gown if they have one and ensure that all of their belongings are in a labelled carrier bag. After lunch, we will get the children changed into their pyjamas. The children will need to wear trainers or wellies on their feet as the site has lots of puddles.

The children do not need to bring any snacks with them as they will be provided with hot chocolate and a cookie on the train (dietary requirements have been catered for). Please do not send your child with any money as they will not have anywhere to spend it.

We will be departing from school at 2:00pm and the coach is expected to return to Newdale for 5:30pm. Please collect your child from the bottom of the Year 1 steps as normal at 5:35pm.

Miss Buckingham’s Class are the BeSMART Cup Winners!

I am very proud of my brilliant class for winning the BeSMART Cup on Friday. The children have chosen to watch a film together snuggled up with a snack on Thursday!

For our movie afternoon, the children are allowed to bring in a dressing gown, onesie or blanket to pop over the top of their uniform as well as slippers on Thursday after lunch (19.10.23). The snack will be provided by school.

Keep up the good work following the BeSMART code!

Exotic Zoo

Year 1 had a fantastic morning with Exotic Zoo!

The children learned about invertebrates and vertebrates, and looked at classification within these groups. We looked at each animals characteristics including how many legs they have, whether they have warm or cold blood and what their skin is covered in.

We got to meet a hissing cockroach, a whip scorpion, a snake, a white tree frog and a skunk! We even got to stroke the cockroach, the snake and the skunk.

Year 1 Nature Walk

Year 1 are heading off on their Nature Walk on Friday 20th October at 1pm. We would love some volunteers to come with us. If you are available between 1pm and 2pm, please can you write a comment in your child’s diary and we will contact you if we need you.

Please can you send your child into school with Wellies and old clothes to get changed into. Forest School Kit is perfect!

Thanks, Year 1 Team

Hej from Year 1!

The children have had a lovely day celebrating European Day of Languages! We’ve been greeting each other in Swedish, learnt about the Swedish culture and were inspired to design our own Dola Horses using traditional folk art. We ended the day celebrating all languages and having a dance to ABBA.
