Phonics challenge

During the summer term (in normal times!) we are able to really challenge the older nursery children with their phonic (letters and sounds) knowledge as they have been working so hard all year.  The children usually know many of the 26 letter sounds by now (don’t worry if your child doesn’t every child is different).  At this point we stretch the children a little more using fun activities to try and read simple words.  As we are unable to do this at nursery at the moment we are hoping that you could try these out at home on a daily basis just for about 15-20 minutes a day.  The children usually love the games and it’s a great way to keep them entertained as well as learning.

My phonics challenge for  today can be found by googling phonics play on the internet.  Please then select the new version and input the current Username:march followed by the Password:home.  This takes you to lots of free games that in normal times schools are charged for but are kindly free during the lock down.  On the site I would like you to select the game Buried treasure at Phase 2 (this level is appropriate for the majority of the children going to school in September).  In this game the children have to drag coins with real words on them to the pirates’ treasure chest and drag the coins with fake words to the dustbin.  In order to help your child with this when you select which letter to use click on “revise all”.  Your child can then look at each letter on the coin saying their sounds out loud and then try to blend the sounds together to read the word.  This takes a bit of practise but we usually tap each sound on our arm as we read them and then stroke our arm as we blend them together.

Please have a go if you can and send in photo’s on the evidence me app.  More challenges to follow!

Start of term

I hope that you’ve all had a good Easter and I wish that we were all back together for the start of term as we usually would be.  Thank you to everyone who has sent in photographs of their child’s activities at home using the evidence me app, we do love seeing what you are all up to.  Please keep checking out the website for lots of ideas for activities at home. I am hoping to get in touch with you all individually by phone over the course of the next few days for a catch up.  Please let me know how things are going and what you would like support with in these rather unusual times.

Hope to speak to you all soon

Good morning nursery and welcome back!
We hope you have made the most of your time at home and enjoyed some much needed sunshine (we hope the sun continues to shine for us). The nursery team are so proud of you all.

Over the next few weeks, nursery will coincide with our school and focus on themed activity weeks that have been introduced. This week will be ‘Art week’ and first up today is Minibeasts. Please see attached for the daily activities.

As always, these are only suggested activities and can be adapted to suit your family.

We will also be putting together some extra support for our letters and sounds activities shortly.

Take care and enjoy your day.

Nursery Activities Friday 3rd April

Good morning nursery, we have made it to the last day of the term!

We hope you have found our daily activities over the last two weeks useful. We will be picking these up again after Easter.

If you would still like some ideas during the Easter break, check out this list of ‘100 things to do indoors’. Why not turn it into a fun game by putting a few of the game names into a hat and choosing a surprise.

Although this holiday is different, we hope you can make the most of it and have fun with your family in your home. Keep smiling and stay safe.

Kind Regards, The Nursery Team.

Nursery Guidance On Writing And Letters

Have a little look at the following attachments on how you can support your children with writing and letters during your time at home.

The writing activities are suggested for all children. There are also some lovely phonic game suggestions for Mighty Oaks (phase 2).

For Ladybug children, your main focus will be to develop their listening skills using phase 1. Our daily activities provide listening activity suggestions you could use to attune your child to sounds around them and build their foundations ready for phase 2.

Please do not worry too much, try not to make it ‘work based’. Essentially, children in Early Years learn through play. Above all, it is about having fun.

The nursery team are so proud of you all.

Make Your Own Playdough Recipe

Good afternoon all! Although I have aimed this at nursery, I think all families may like to have a go!

Today, I have recorded an easy step by step playdough recipe using ingredients you may well have at home. Have a little look at the video below and see if you can make your own! I find making playdough with the children almost as fun as playing with it.

Please take extra care when using hot water – grown ups to do this bit.

The ingredients you will need are as follows:

1 cup flour

1/4 cup salt

3/4 cup of (hot) water

3 tablespoons lemon juice (this is substituted cream of tartar)

1 tablespoon sunflower oil

Food colouring (optional)

You may need to add more flour once your playdough has been mixed. Keep kneading until you get to a soft texture. You can also add scents such as conditioner/vanilla essence etc to create a nice smell.

I have also attached some playdough mats you can use once your playdough is ready and cooled down (if you have polly pockets you can pop them inside).

If you do not have access to playdough tools, how about using children’s toys. Small world figures such as dinosaurs make fabulous prints!

You could also use the playdough for letter or number activities. Let your imagination take over!

I hope you have found this useful. Take care
