Year 1 Snow Day

Good morning Year 1! We’re sorry we had to close but we hope you will be able to enjoy some time at home today and most importantly get out and enjoy the snow!

Reading

As you know we LOVE reading at Newdale, here is a video of Miss Harrison reading a story we will be looking at very soon.

What book will you choose to read today? Also, look out for Miss Phonics… Oh sorry! Mrs Thomas’s post with a RWI phonics video just for you!

Geography/Science

We know how important it is to have real life experiences – so please get outside:
take photographs, listen to the sounds around you, or look for animal tracks.

Writing
Our up coming Science topic is all about weather and seasons. Could you write a description of your garden or street in your reading diary? Think about adding adjectives or the conjunction ‘and’. Here’s a great example:

I can see icy roads and footpaths. I can see frosty flakes fall from the sky and settle on tall branches. Bright snow covers everything I can see. It feels icy, cold and wet. I can hear the quiet drips of melting snow.  I can hear the crunchy thick snow under my feet.

I know some of you also love handwriting practise so here are some letters we’ve been practising lately.

Maths
We’d love to hear your highest score on Hit the Button https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button for number bonds to 10.

Art
We recently studied Andy Goldsworthy art. He makes temporary sculptures in nature. We think snow is perfect for this. Please send the year 1 email pictures of your snow structures (remember to ask your adult and wrap up in something warm and waterproof)! Here are some ideas… Although we love snow angels and snowmen as well if these don’t work.

We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to seeing you on Monday,

The Year 1 team.

Volunteers Nature Walk

Hi all,

Year 1 have our half termly nature walk coming up on Wednesday 22nd March.
We will be walking roughly 2 miles along the paths around school looking for signs of spring (flowers, birds’ nests, leaves on trees, etc.).

We will be leaving school at 13:20 and returning at 14:45 and would love to take 2 volunteers per class to help us spot seasonal changes!

If you would like to volunteer, and are available, please can you send us an email or write in your child’s reading diary.

Many thanks,

Year 1 team :)

Year 1 – BH World Book Day

We LOVED dressing up for World Book Day today!
It was fantastic to learn about lots of different characters and all the great books they are from. Can you work out who everyone is?

We got to share our books and read them to each other. It was lots of fun!

We also enjoyed reading Hairy Maclary as a class and completed some fabulous writing using ‘and to extend our sentence.

Paddington’s Party – Year 1

Paddington has been in touch with Year 1 to sadly inform us that he had lost his Aunt’s marmalade sandwich recipe. Luckily, Year 1 are brilliant cooks and knew exactly how to make the delicious treat. We independently wrote our instructions for Paddington in our ‘Chance to Shine’ books.

Paddington was so impressed! He invited us to a tea party. We loved bringing in our teddies today and had a fabulous time spreading different fillings for our sandwiches.

Guess what! Later on in the year, we will be making healthy sandwiches in D&T. We think we will definitely remember how to make them and may even have some healthier alternatives for Paddington to try…

Cool Cat Week

This week is Cool Cat Week! 😊

Cool Cat will be visiting every day this week so make sure you at school nice and early to see them!

Any class that achieves 100% attendance will receive a treat on Friday so please try your best to get to school on time everyday and help your Year 1 team!  🐱🐱🐱

P.s. Just a reminder that PE days have changed to Monday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor). Forest school is still Wednesday afternoons.

History train trip – Y1 Miss Harrison’s

In year 1, we have been learning all about George Stephenson and his fantastic inventions. His engineering led to a big change in how people travelled around the UK.

Yesterday, we visited Telford Steam Train.
We looked at steam train from 1941 and compared it to a newer diesel engine from the 1960s (which turned out to be slower than the steam train!).

Next, we had lots of fun at the station. We LOVED the winter wonderland where we had the BEST snowball fight EVER!!

Then, we explored the smallest railway we had ever seen. The tiny trains were really fast.

At last, we enjoyed a biscuit and a drink in a cosy café.

Thank you so much to the wonderful volunteers. You really made our day and brought big smiles to all of our little faces!

Year 1’s first week!

We have LOVED meeting all our new children and have been so impressed with how they have settled.

They have done really well learning the BeSMART code and are starting to put it into practise all the time.

This week we have listened to lots of fantastic stories, explored forest school, met our new sports coaches, and created amazing artwork. Can you spot some in our classroom windows?

A quick note to say thank you for being so patient whilst we try to learn your faces at going home time. We will get quicker at this.

Year 5 Carding Mill Valley Trip

Good afternoon all,

Putting a last call out for volunteers! We would ideally like 2 more adults to accompany us on our trip to Carding Mill Valley – Tuesday 7th June 2022. We will be on the coach at 9:15am and return to school at roughly 3pm.

There will be some moderate walking on a fairly steep gravel path and helping children to sketch the landscape around them – no expertise on rivers needed. There are toilets on site and some break times between activities.

Please email the year 5 team at newdale.year5team@taw.org.uk if you are interested.

Thank you,

Year 5 team.
