Extension challenge: My car has the capacity for 60 litres of petrol. At the moment, petrol costs £1.06 per litre.

• How much would it cost me to fill up my car from the following?

  • 10% full
  • Half full

My car can get 8.4 miles per litre. How far could I drive on a full tank? Could I make it to Scotland?

Today it is time to move from area and perimeter onto volume, but you will notice that you will be using the same skills.

Step 1 – You will need your multiplication skills, so warm up with 10 minutes on Times Tables Rock Star.

Step 2 – Look at the powerpoint and video to get an understanding of how to calculate the volume.

Tuesday Estimating volume

Hi All,

I tried to schedule this post to come up early this morning, but it didn’t work!

Today’s task will test your ability to calculate area and perimeter, you will then need to use this information and your multiplication skills to calculate the cost of new carpet and skirting board. Choose which version you would like to do. You could use a calculator on a computer or phone to check your answers.

Remember your units! E.g. meters for perimeter, metres squared for area and pounds for money.

It was great to see all your Space work last week and I’d like you all to don your lab coats and goggles again because this week’s theme will be materials and forces. Remember that we absolutely LOVE to see your science exploration on the blog. Below are some ideas for you to have a go at this week.

• Choose a couple of different sporting items and write about what they are made of and why those materials/shapes have been used. A few examples of interesting things to research could be tennis rackets, badminton shuttlecocks, ice hockey pucks, footballs, trainers!
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54noZe-0B1c Use these designs to create some fantastic paper aeroplanes. Create a presentation or piece of work explaining the forces in play that help them fly or try to stop them from flying!
• Build a car – You will need to think about materials and also how to power it! You might want to add in electricity (safely) or use elastic bands or balloons or just gravity!
• Create an enquiry question for yourself about forces. For example, “Does friction exist?” You could plan and carry out the investigation and then write a conclusion about what you have found out.

Miss Myler and I are very pleased with all the hard work you have been putting in this week. It’s going to be really tricky to choose our Stars of the Week!

Today, you will be learning how to find the area of compound shapes. Just as a compound sentence is made up of 2 or more clauses, a compound shape is made up of 2 or more basic shapes put together.

Step 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osn8P_TiXKg Watch this video from 2:11 – After finding any missing sides, you can find the area by splitting the shape into it’s basic shapes. Then use yesterday’s skills to calculate the area!
