Home Learning for Week Commencing 13th July

Welcome to your final week as a Year 5 pupil. Well done on continuing to develop your skills up until the end of the school year. Miss Myler and I have been really impressed by your perseverance and hard work throughout these strange times; it has been super to see so many of you blogging your work too. Please remember that you can contact us via email or on PurpleMash if you have any questions.

Maths: This week, we will continue to focus on fractions skills with some open-ended investigations. There is also a problem solving challenge on Thursday which you may want to do with a partner. Perhaps you could be a computing whizz like Libby and Poppy and complete the work over video-chat together? Maybe you want to work through the problems with your parents or an older sibling?

Revision week 4

Science: I’d like you to find a few containers in your house. For example, an egg cup, a glass, a bowl and a saucepan. Fill each with the same amount of salt water (Add a teaspoon for each 100ml and mix in). Which container will evaporate the fastest and why? Keep checking on your containers throughout the week. What do you notice? Which shape would be the best for a bird bath so that the water doesn’t evaporate quickly?

Literacy:
Create your own game (this could be based on a current game and adapt its rules or be really creative and think of a new game from scratch). Perhaps you will design a board game rather than a sporting game.  Extension: Write a set of instructions including the players, their roles and the equipment that you would need to play them.

English – The Game

Guided Reading:
Set as 2dos on PM

Spellings:

Set on PM and uploaded to the spellings page on the Y5 Newdale page.

Art:
Research “aluxes” in Maya culture. We have been looking at these mischievous beings in school and I would like you to create one of your own. You could draw your aluxes, junk model it using your recycling or create it out of clay or playdough.

DT:
Watch an episode of the dengineers from CBBC on BBC iPlayer. Create a moodboard of your ideal den. Then draw out your initial design. You could even have a go at creating your den out of objects you can find around your home.

Topic – https://www.snowdonia.gov.wales/home# Use the Snowdonia tourist board website to create a poster persuading people to visit the area. Remember to include information about where to stay, what to do and how the land is looked after for future generations. You might want to research local food and beautiful towns to visit in the area. You could use Google Earth to explore the area and even see the view from the top of Mt. Snowdon!

Busy Day

Today the children looked at how Muslims have many names for their god, Allah. They recreated the Arabic script and thought about why they would want a god to possess each quality.

In the afternoon, the children learnt about “Simultanism” – an artistic style which exploits the fact that colours change according to what is around them. This was linked to geometric shapes in fashion.

HP Complementing Colours

Fantastic work today using watercolours on intricate designs. We focused on using colours which complemented one another and developed our skills with colour mixing. Ola, Tia, Bailey and Emma particularly impressed me today. Well done!

Home learning for week commencing 29th June 2020

Happy Monday!

I hope that this week brings the same glorious sunshine as last week. We are still loving seeing all the work you are sending in so keep it up in the last few weeks before the holidays!

Maths

This week we will be re-capping a range of skills to do with place value. These will really come in handy as you move into Y6.

Revision week 2  Friday Arithmetic

Literacy

This week’s project is all about expressive, creative writing. I can’t wait to see your imaginations run wild. Remember that Guided Reading and Spellings will still be available through PurpleMash.

29th June 2020

Science

In Science this week, I would like you to use you independent research skills to create a poster about Forces. For example, you could explain all the forces acting upon someone who is going skiing.

Topic

In Geography this week, I would like you to produce an investigation into the River Severn with a focus on how the river erodes the landscape as well as what happens when it floods. You may want to look for a case study of flooding in Ironbridge in particular as it was hit badly over winter.

Natural impacts of rivers

Art

Hogwarts is looking out for yet another Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Their job is to teach the pupils how to keep safe when facing dark magic. They need to teach young witches and wizards to produce powerful spells to overcome evil. I’d like you to design the new teacher and give them a fantastic outfit. You may wish to research what other witches and wizards wear, or use your own fashion sense to give them cool elements. You could also re-design one of these characters!Harry Potter redesigns by Schweizercomics on tumblr. Love this ...

Stars of the week for 5GB

I have to say that I have been super impressed by everyone in my little bubble this week. They have all settled back into routine well and adjusted to being part of a different group of people. Thanks to all of them for making school enjoyable!

We have been weaving on hand made looms this afternoon and I was amazed by how well everyone followed tricky instructions. Well done!
