Friday’s phonic challenge

On a Friday we usually go over the phonics we have learnt that week and play a few games.  One of the games that has always proved popular is bingo.  This particular version is available on twinkle (this is a free website at the moment) and the game you are looking for is called “cvc bingo matching card game”.  Again, use the phase 2 level as this is most appropriate.  However, this only works with a printer.  You could instead though make your own version with your child, they could draw the pictures and write the letters.  You would need to make two boards (if you’re not sure how they should look just google the game even if you’re not going to print it).  The words include net, man, dog, tap and so on.

Have fun!

Nursery Numicon Challenge

Numicon:

Numicon is a teaching aid consisting of plastic tiles with holes which represent the numbers 1 to 10. They can be used to teach place value, ordering and calculation. Numicon are designed to make numbers real for children by them being able to see and physically touch each number.

Each Numicon shape provides children with a visual image of what a number looks like. A child will start to recognise the relationship between different numbers, as each Numicon piece has an extra hole to the last one.

As you may not have access to actual Numicon resources, I have attached a copy you can use as a paper template to print and cut them out. Once you get the hang of Numicon, you can make an activity as simple or as challenging as you wish.

So for our first challenge, we would simply like you to have a little play with them. We use Numicon in nursery already so your child may surprise you!

Next week I will be posting some ‘Numicon Challenge’ activities to support you.

Key worker children information

If your child is currently attending school because you are a key worker, please can you provide your child with sun cream to bring into school so they can apply it when needed. School staff have planned spending more time outside to make the most of the beautiful weather and social distancing easier for all staff and children.

Thursday’s phonics challenge

Today, I thought we’d get a little active!  Please could you help your child write the following letters on separate pieces of A4 (or similar) sized paper…

s a t p i n

When you have done this place them around the room and put some music on.  Encourage your child to dance around to the music and then when the music stops call a letter out and your child runs to it (a bit like musical chairs).  Repeat this with all of the letters.

Bring the letters back to the carpet or table together and explain that you are going to put some of them together to make words, can they help you read them?

For example, you could put p a t together, sound it out carefully by tapping your arm and then stroke the sounds together.  You could then swap out one of the letters and continue to make new words.  Your child, if they are feeling confident could make their own words up.  This is a great activity to use again another day, just chose different letters, enjoy!

Nursery Activities Thursday 23rd April

Good morning nursery, another sunny day for us!

We have received some wonderful photos from parents and carers, thank you for keeping in touch with us. The parent interaction through the Evidence Me app and our Facebook page enables us to continue to build profiles and work on wonderful next steps for your children. We also love to see them to simply know that you are all safe and well 🌈

Here are the suggested activities for today.

Wednesday phonics challenge

Today I’d like you to return to “new phonics play” on the internet and select the game “reading robot”.  Select the phase 2 level.  Your child then looks at each word on the robot’s chest and tries to say each letter sound (you can of course look back at Mrs Giordano’s letter cards to help them at this point).  As they say each sound we would then get the children to pat their arm.  We encourage the children to stroke their arm next whilst saying each sound in order to blend them together, don’t worry it this sounds confusing the children should know what to do!  If they read the word correctly press the green tick if not press the red cross.  Your child will then get a score.  You could record this score and then return to this game another time, can they beat their score?

Wonderful Wednesdays

Carrying on with our theme of farming in cooking and looking down my list of so many wonderful ideas from the children. Today’s suggestion comes from Tiger- lily in Blue Group. Tiger wanted to make Flap Jacks!

The main ingredient in flap jacks is oats. What are oats? Where does it come from?

Oats grow in fields like wheat and barley all year round. Crops sown in spring and harvested in August are called ‘spring oats‘. Crops sown in September and harvested in spring are called ‘winter oats‘.

The video clip link is very short and shows you how the farmer grows the wheat then how it goes through

the machines all the way to the shops. This video also shows you how the oats become yummy Porridge at the end, another great treat with a spoon of jam on top.

I’ve attached a really easy recipe for you to follow, but feel free to get experimenting by adding some of your favourite fruits 🍇 🍏 🍒

Share your little ones creations with us, we’d all love to see. Have a wonderful Wednesday 👨🏿‍🍳👩‍🍳
