Thursday Maths

Good morning!

To warm up, I’d like you to watch this video and write a little reflection to your teacher about it. https://nrich.maths.org/13664

Your reflection should include the key vocabulary of “volume” and “capacity”

Next, I would like you to choose a collection of containers from the kitchen, you may want different glasses, mugs, pans, bowls etc. https://nrich.maths.org/10337

You could even work out the capacity in millilitres of each of the containers. It would be great to see your photos and reflections on the blog!

Tuesday Maths

Good morning all!

Today it is time to move from area and perimeter onto volume, but you will notice that you will be using the same skills.

Step 1 – You will need your multiplication skills, so warm up with 10 minutes on Times Tables Rock Star.

Step 2 – Look at the powerpoint and video to get an understanding of how to calculate the volume.

PowerPoint – What Is Volume

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxkRlIAucMk

Step 3 – Put your skills into practise with the worksheets. You could count the cubes to help you with the irregular shapes.

Monday Maths`

Hi All,

I tried to schedule this post to come up early this morning, but it didn’t work!

Today’s task will test your ability to calculate area and perimeter, you will then need to use this information and your multiplication skills to calculate the cost of new carpet and skirting board. Choose which version you would like to do. You could use a calculator on a computer or phone to check your answers.

Remember your units! E.g. meters for perimeter, metres squared for area and pounds for money.

This week’s Science activities

Morning scientists!

It was great to see all your Space work last week and I’d like you all to don your lab coats and goggles again because this week’s theme will be materials and forces. Remember that we absolutely LOVE to see your science exploration on the blog. Below are some ideas for you to have a go at this week.

  • Choose a couple of different sporting items and write about what they are made of and why those materials/shapes have been used. A few examples of interesting things to research could be tennis rackets, badminton shuttlecocks, ice hockey pucks, footballs, trainers!
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54noZe-0B1c Use these designs to create some fantastic paper aeroplanes. Create a presentation or piece of work explaining the forces in play that help them fly or try to stop them from flying!
  • Build a car – You will need to think about materials and also how to power it! You might want to add in electricity (safely) or use elastic bands or balloons or just gravity!
  • Create an enquiry question for yourself about forces. For example, “Does friction exist?” You could plan and carry out the investigation and then write a conclusion about what you have found out.
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nORRgU8sGdE Create your own Rude Goldberg machine – THIS ONE IS AMAZING FUN! It could do anything you want it to do. You could think about the different forces at play.

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

Feel good Friday!

Hello Year 5, you wonderful bunch of superstars….and happy Friday to you!

You have all worked so hard this week, that I thought you deserved a giggle. Plus the thought of making you laugh, actually makes me really happy – even if it is at my expense! So for my feel good Friday picture I have chosen ….

……Niamh and I in our pyjamas and face masks! You just can’t beat a bit of pampering Year 5!

What is your feel good Friday photo going to be? I can’t wait to find out.

Have a fabulous weekend and get pampering!

Friday’s Maths

Happy Friday!

I can’t wait to see all your Feel Good Friday posts coming through today!

You have been using your calculation skills of addition and multiplication well this week and I’m pleased to see lots of progress. Particularly with the compound shapes. Today I’d like you to have a go at this problem. https://nrich.maths.org/4963/index Try and use your skills that you have been learning about to work it out. Once you have finished, you can click “solution” and you can see how you got on.

Extension: Please write to your teacher with a reflection. What are you enjoying about the Maths? How have you got on with things this week? Is there anything you would like more practise with?

Optional work: I will attach another White Rose assignment which will test your ability to count the area of irregular shapes.

If you would like to explore with other challenges then you may want to try this one. Remember that you can look at the solution when you have had enough! https://nrich.maths.org/7280

Thursday’s Maths

Thursday 30th April 2020

Miss Myler and I are very pleased with all the hard work you have been putting in this week. It’s going to be really tricky to choose our Stars of the Week!

Today, you will be learning how to find the area of compound shapes. Just as a compound sentence is made up of 2 or more clauses, a compound shape is made up of 2 or more basic shapes put together.

Step 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osn8P_TiXKg Watch this video from 2:11 – After finding any missing sides, you can find the area by splitting the shape into it’s basic shapes. Then use yesterday’s skills to calculate the area!

Step 2: Complete the White Rose resources for today and check carefully against the answers. Can you see where you may have gone wrong?

This week’s RE task

For this week’s RE task, I would like you to answer the question Who was Muhammed and why was he important to Islam?

Here are some links to help you:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zympvcw

https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/Muhammad/353502

http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/re/pdfs/the_story_of_Mohammad.pdf

You can present your work however you like. You could use tools on purple mash or use Google docs/slides or just work on paper.

Some things you might like to look into would be:

Where was he born and when?

What events happened in his life?

Why do Muslims still respect him?

You may even want to compare his teachings with Jesus or Guru Nanak to find similarities across the religions of Islam, Christianity and Sikhism.

I really look forward to seeing what you produce but PLEASE REMEMBER that Muslims do not believe that we should draw natural beings, including the prophet Muhammed.

Wednesday’s Maths

Wednesday 28th April 2020

Morning All,

I am so pleased my internet is back up and running this morning! I hope that you will all be able to get stuck in with Mrs Stack’s TTRS competition!

I hope you are feeling confident now in finding the perimeter. If you would like some practise then https://mrnussbaum.com/find-the-missing-perimeter-measure-in-rectangles-online has some great questions. Just be aware that for some of the shapes, you have missing sides, but it does tell you the perimeter. You will have to find the difference between the sides you know and the total perimeter to find the length of the sides.

Today, I’d like you to consider area, recapping finding the area of squares and rectangles. The simple way to do it is to multiply the width times the height. This will give your answer in “square” units. E.g A square with sides of 6cm = 6cm x 6cm = 36cm².

Use the White Rose materials, using this knowledge to help you!

Extension: Find the perimeter (in steps if you don’t have a tape measure handy) of your garden or a room in your house. Can you try and estimate the perimeter? Can you work it out exactly?
