Year 5 Spellings W/C 29.6.20

Hello year 5,

For those of you who have returned to school, your spellings for week commencing 29th June 2020 are a new set of jumping orange words. These are another set of tricky ones, so try to practise them as often as you can in spelling scribbles, silly sentences, a spelling story or simply with LSCWC (look, say, cover, write, check) on the attached sheet.

Week 2 JO Spellings

If you are continuing to work from home, I will continue to email you as normal with your weekly spellings and their associated activities, so please disregard this.

Many thanks

Mrs Stack

Stars of the week for 5GB

I have to say that I have been super impressed by everyone in my little bubble this week. They have all settled back into routine well and adjusted to being part of a different group of people. Thanks to all of them for making school enjoyable!

We have been weaving on hand made looms this afternoon and I was amazed by how well everyone followed tricky instructions. Well done!

Mr Banfield

Max’s fabulous artwork

I am so pleased to be sharing with you all this amazing pastel picture which Max has created. He has blended colours seamlessly to create a stunning piece of art! Well done Max, I’m pleased to see you developing your passions for both Art and Space!

Work for week commencing 15th June

Happy Monday Everybody!

It was great to see all your furry blog posts this weekend! I hope you were all able to make the most of the weather and get outside; you will probably have started to notice the season changing from the lush greenery of Spring to the more muted Summer tones.

I’ll be seeing some of you in the Year 5 key-worker hub, but if you are still learning from home, remember to do a little bit everyday!

Literacy: This week’s literacy tasks are all on one document so it should be easier for you. There are a range of tasks to choose from each day, with extensions to try out throughout the week. I’m really looking forward to seeing your extended creative writing this week.

15th June Y5 Literacy PDF

SPaG: This week’s focus is super punctuation. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/english-games/7-11-years/punctuation Use these games for 10 minutes or so everyday to refresh your memory of how different pieces of punctuation may be used.

Guided Reading: This will be set as 2Dos alongside spelling on PurpleMash

Maths:

Monday – The Sieve of Eratosthenes – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBbHzy7v2Kg Watch this video to see how the sieve works. Then use the colour function for the grid (below) to get rid of all the multiples of 2, 3, 4 etc. This should leave you with all the prime numbers up to 100. How many are there? What is the sum of all the prime numbers below 100? https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/71/itp-number-grid

Tuesday – Multiplication refresher – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9_goDnS8Wg Recap the method of long multiplication before tackling 4 digit by 2 digit multiplication. Extension: Define the words factor and multiple.

Y5 Spring Block 1 WO5 Multiply 4-digits by 2-digits 2019 Y5 Spring Block 1 ANS5 Multiply 4-digits by 2-digits 2019

Wednesday – Start off with 5-10 minutes on TTRS to get your multiplication skills warmed up. Then have a crack at these questions. Put a timer on for 20 minutes and see how many you can complete. Check your answers at the end and see if you can identify where you made any errors.

Thursday – Run for the bus stop! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZYEbggd-c4 Recap the bus-stop method of division before tackling the problems today.

Y5 Spring Block 1 ANS6 Divide 4-digits by 1-digit 2019

Extension: http://www.math-play.com/Division-Millionaire/division-millionaire-game_html5.html Become a millionaire!

Friday – Warm up your division skills https://www.arcademics.com/games/demolition. Think carefully about the bar model questions. If the bar is split into 6 then your divisor will be 6. The divisor is the number you divide by (to the left of the bus stop).

Y5 Spring Block 1 WO7 Divide with remainders 2019 Y5 Spring Block 1 ANS7 Divide with remainders 2019

Extension: https://nrich.maths.org/10490 You could create your own numbers to divide and try to find a pattern when dividing by a set divisor.

Topic: I’d like you to create a river from source to mouth like this example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WieDc7Ymais. You could draw it or create it using craft skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsXKv1yfNFk This video helps show you some of the features of the river. You could use the sheet below to label the features of a river, but creating it yourself will help the information stick in your head!

Music: This week, I’d like you to create a concert poster for one of these musicians: Elvis Presley, Mozart, Beyoncé, Bob Marley or Daft Punk. You will need to find out what they look like, which songs or pieces of music they are famous for, which genre they belong to (type of music). You may want to think carefully about the style of poster depending on the genre of music. You could choose an appropriate venue for their music type too! Listen to a few songs by each before choosing so you can get to grips with their individual styles! Alternatively, ask your parents or grandparents to play you their favourite pieces of music and choose one of the artists they suggest!

Science: Continue to make your inventory of the natural world around you. There are a few really good apps which you could download (with permission) to help you identify plants, such as Leafsnap.

DT: This week’s theme is DT so keep your eyes peeled for loads of activities to try out throughout the week!

Furry Feel Good Friday

Morning Year 5!

Meet Bonnie, she is my new furry friend! Being able to give her a little cuddle gives me so much joy! Today, I’d love to see all your pets posted on the blog. Don’t worry if you don’t have a pet, you could always post your favourite cuddly toy! Let’s make sure that anyone who opens the blog over the next few days lets out an, “Awww!”

This week’s RE

You will have noticed this year that we have been focusing our attention on important people in three major religions, Sikhism, Christianity and Islam.

This week, I would like you to research the 10 Sikh Gurus who were considered highly wise leaders before finally, Sikh teachings were written down in the Guru Granth Sahib.

https://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Ten_Sikh_Gurus

Use this link to read about the major acts of each of the Gurus, then I would like you to create something to help you remember what they did. You may want to create a piece of art or poetry. Maybe you will make them and their great deeds out of plasticine. Perhaps you will make a PowerPoint. It is your choice how you present your findings! Remember that you can always use the PurpleMash tools to complete work and then you can email it to your teacher! Enjoy!

Wednesday Maths

Good Morning Timelords!

I hope that you are feeling more comfortable about telling the time now.

As a quick warm up, play this short game. See if you can work out what the digital time would be on a 24 hour clock (add 12 hours) https://www.primarygames.com/time/question3.htm

Next: Make a list of important things that you do each day such as wake up, have breakfast, brush teeth etc.. https://www.visnos.com/demos/clock

Use the clock to make the times and then write down what the time is on the 12 hour or 24 hour digital clock in the top right. Remember that things you do in the afternoon will be 12+ hours. For example, if I schedule a zoom call for quarter to five in the evening, that will be 16:45 in the 24 hour clock or 4:45pm on the 12 hour digital clock.

Extension: Write down how long it took to do each task in an appropriate unit of time, e.g. seconds, minutes or hours.
