Year 1 Maths – Monday 20th April

Hi everyone!

We hope you have had a lovely, restful couple of weeks over Easter. We have loved seeing some of the fun, Easter projects that you have been busy completing and we are sure you are eager to get back to your home learning now 🙂

Our focus in Maths this week is going to be telling the time and today we are going to begin by learning o’clock times.

Monday 20th April Maths Activities

Today’s lesson asks you to warm up your maths brain with an active maths challenge. Some of you may have started to have a go at some of these challenges over Easter, so perhaps you could choose 1 or 2 more to have a go at today!

Here is an example of what Activity 3 might look like….we can’t wait to see all of your super work on PurpleMash 🙂

Home Schooling Literacy Monday 20th April 2020

Hello Year 1. We were so lucky to have a beautiful, warm Easter holidays. We have planned some nice things for you to kick-start your final term in Year 1.

We sent spellings out on the last day before the holidays. Please practise these today, ready for your test on Friday. You could turn this into the 4-in-a-row style game attached below either by printing or on paper.  ing suffix 4 in a row game

As part of our new Science growing theme, we are beginning the new story of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. In Y1 it is important to learn and recite familiar tales in order. Please read the story to your child and encourage them to join in with the repetitive familiar parts.

When you have finished the story, see if your child can order the story. They could do this by acting out the story (We would love to see pictures of this) or they could make their own character puppets either by drawing their own puppets and cutting them out or using the templates provided if you have a printer.

Can they repeat all the words? Can they introduce new characters in order?

Here is a copy of the story and resources you may need.

We are looking forward to seeing your Literacy work today.

Welcome Back Year 1!

Hello Year 1. We hope you had a good Easter break!

We are starting some new topics for the Summer Term. Attached below is the overview of what we would normally cover in class during this term. We will try and tailor home schooling tasks as closely as possible to cover these areas until schools reopen.

Year 1 Curriculum Overview Summer 2020

We look forward to hearing from you all soon and seeing your amazing work.

Fun fruit snacks 🍎 , outdoor painting 🎨 and teddy bear hunts 🧸

On Thursday, we enjoyed playing cricket outside in the sunshine. When we got hungry we re-fuelled by making our own fruit caterpillar snacks 🐛. We took them outside to eat in the sunshine and played some more  games. After lunch, we used some old wallpaper to do some Spring painting outside. Then, we went on our very own bear hunt. There were 10 bears for us to find and each bear had an exercise challenge for us to complete. We finished our day by watching an animation of ‘We are going on a Bear Hunt’ on YouTube. Thank you for such a lovely day everyone!

Today we went on a lovely nature walk. Mrs Perkins made some fantastic envelopes so that we could collect our findings. We spotted a mouse taking cover in the roots of the hedgerow, looked at how Holly leaves are not all the same and also discovered lichen on the trees. After all our exploring, we chilled out by making daisy chains.

In the afternoon, we made our own playdough and played outside! Well done Harry and Jack for making school really enjoyable!

Happy Easter Year 1!

You have all worked so hard in your first two weeks of home schooling. We have been so impressed with the photos and work that you have shared with us this week, so please scroll back to last week’s post to find the star certificates! ⭐I am sure you can all think of something you are really proud of achieving this week – we would love to see your certificates shared on the blog.

We are now beginning the Easter holidays and we know you all deserve a well-earned break so we won’t be setting you daily Maths and Literacy activities. However, please keep up with practising your spellings and aim to read at least three times a week. Don’t forget you can access lots of free e-books using Oxford Owl (instructions are in reading diaries). 📚                       https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

We know that this break from school is going to be slightly different so we have created a list of fun activities that you can do –  without needing to leave your home! Please also feel free to look back on any of the Literacy and Maths activities (particularly online and PurpleMash games) that you have been set over the past couple of weeks – I am sure the children would enjoy playing some of these games again! Remember, there is no obligation to complete these, we just thought they may be useful to have…and fun for the whole family!

Year 1 Home Schooling Friday 3rd April 2020

Hello Y1! Well done for making it to the end of term and continuing all the amazing work at home that you would in class. It will make all the difference and we are incredibly proud of you all!

Here are some lesson ideas for Friday.

Friday is spelling day again – so can parents test you on the spellings you have practised at home all week? Again, please send your scores to Mrs Goodwin and Mrs Lee via the PurpleMash email as they cannot wait to hear how you get on.

Here are the next set of spellings which you may already have a paper copy of:

Year 1 spellings Spring Week 12 suffix ing

Mrs Goodwin’s Group spellings e-e

Mrs Lee’s Group (recap or er)

For Literacy today there is a final game linked to our theme of suffixes this week. This time we are looking at plurals. On PurpleMash a 2do has been set to match the singular (one object) to the plural (more than one object) e.g cat to cats. This is a fun memory style game so have fun!

We have also popped on a fun Science/Art activity as our topic of Materials comes to an end. Can you draw a picture of your house, choosing the correct materials it is made from? Here is a picture I have attempted of my house :) It is trickier than it looks!

Value of the Month- April

Our value of the month for April is Freedom

What is Freedom?

  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Self-expression
  • Freedom of speech

Suggestions for parents to work with children at home:

  • Together, talk about people in history who were being ruled by someone else and wanted freedom, e.g. Moses and the Israelites, slaves in the US before the Civil War; Hanukkah; Nelson Mandela.
  • Discuss with your child about historical slavery and modern day human trafficking.
  • Discuss with your child about the Syria Refugee Crisis.
  • Different Rules of Law around the world. Discuss with your child democracy in Britain and how this may be different from countries around the world.
  • Freedom of self- expression. Discuss with your child the importance of their identity and being able to express themselves. Explain that people living in Britain are able to express themselves how they choose; as long as it doesn’t break the law (Individual Liberty).
  • Discuss inner freedom– having positive thoughts. What does inner freedom feel like? When do you feel most free? What kinds of thoughts make you feel free? Constrained?
