Year 5 Snow Day activities

Good morning year 5.

We hope you are all excited about the snow day and have plans to go outside and safely enjoy the snow!

We would love for you to build a snowman, snow pet or anything your imagination can dream up! Take a picture and email it to our year 5 email address (newdale.year5team@taw.org.uk) as we’d love to see them!

Remember to go for a walk in the snow and have hot chocolate (if you can) and make those Snow Day memories.

For indoor learning

As a part of our Literacy we have been looking at persuasive writing techniques, posters and leaflets. Our task has been linked to advertising the shops in Diagon Alley (Harry Potter) and trying to persuade people to shop there.

Can you produce a poster or a leaflet advertising Diagon Alley or one of the shops there?

Shops:

Madam Malkin’s Robes         Gringotts Bank        Flourish and Blotts

Ollivanders Wand Shop     Eeylops Owl Emporium     Apothecary

Quality Quidditch Supplies

Persuasive techniques:

Bold writing        bullet points        alliteration        similes

Pictures        emotive language    facts    opinions    statistics

Rhetorical questions    modal verbs        personal address

You could do this on the computer or on paper. Remember, we would love to see it, so email it in, if completed online or bring it to school with you next week.

Spellings

As we were unable to hand out the homework for the spelling words, we will provide them here for you.

You could practise writing them over and over, pyramid writing, or create a colourful collage of all the words. We will still have our usual Friday spelling test on these next week.

Special Focus 1: Words that contain the letter -string ough

Please remember to stay safe and enjoy the snow in a sensible way.

We look forward to seeing you Monday, bright and early (6.45am) on Rock Road for our school trip 🙂

Stay safe,

The year 5 team

Year 5 remote learning.

Good morning year 5!  Happy SNOW day 😄❄️
Some tasks to keep you busy are on google classroom. You can complete them in any order.

1) Literacy and spellings
Complete the speech task on google classroom. Or, use this link: Speech interrupted: inverted commas and punctuation rules | Oak National Academy

2) Reading
Review a book at home. Create a book review in your reading diaries.

3) Maths
Complete the task on google classroom. If you can’t get on, here is a similar task:
Explain how to calculate the area of a rectangle using multiplication | Oak National Academy

4) Science
Complete the task on google classroom or create your own friction experiment.
Use the link to learn more about the force of friction: Friction: plan | Oak National Academy
Investigation ideas:
How does friction affect the speech of different materials across snow?
Which surface has the least friction?
Which material has the most friction for walking on snow/ice?

5) Competition time!
Get out there early… Who can create the tallest snow sculpture? Share photos with us and include height measurements.

  • Choose Your Location: Find a flat and open space where you can build your sculpture.
The more compact the snow is, the easier it will be to work with.
  • Plan Your Design: Decide what shape your snow sculpture will take. The taller the sculpture, the more wide you’ll need to make the base to prevent it from toppling over.
  • Measure the Height: To measure the height of your sculpture, stand a ruler or
measuring tape next to the sculpture and measure from the ground to the top. You might need a second person to help you measure accurately.

Have a wonderful day and stay safe in the snow!

Snow Day – Year 5

Good Morning Year 5

As you will have seen, school will not be open today due the snowy conditions. Mrs Arthurs and I will be putting some activities onto Google Classroom to keep you busy today. Please try and get yourselves logged on, go to classwork and then look for the topic ‘Snowday’. Feel free to also go on TTRS, Fiction Express and start your homework, which was stuck into your home books yesterday.

If you have any issues or problems, please contact newdale.year5team@taw.org.uk

You can also use this email address to send any work you want to share with us today – especially any snow related activities you get up to today! The competition for the largest snowball starts now!

We hope you have a great day,

The Year 5 Team.
