Measles- Early Years

Measles and the MMR vaccine

You may have read about the UK Health Security Agency’s assessment that a measles outbreak of between 40,000 and 160,000 cases could occur in London, primarily due to low vaccination rates.

In the West Midlands, only 85% of children have had BOTH of their MMR vaccines by the age of 5 years. Over the last few weeks, we have started to see some cases of measles in the region – all are in young unvaccinated children. This is significantly below the 95% MMR uptake rate needed to support herd immunity from measles.

It can take up to 21 days for symptoms of measles to show (incubation period), so an unvaccinated child could have measles without realising and spread the infection – so anyone who has not had at least one MMR and is in contact with a case of measles will need to be excluded from nursery for 21 days after contact with the infected person. Contacts of measles cases should also not be mixing outside their household for that same time period.

Parents should check their children are fully vaccinated with 2 MMR doses, which gives 99% life-long protection, by checking their red book or with their GP practice, which younger and older adults can also do. Anyone not up-to-date should make an appointment as soon as possible.

It’s vital all children and adults catch up on any missed vaccinations and this is especially important if travelling overseas this summer.

Dr Vanessa Saliba, UKHSA Consultant Epidemiologist said:

“Measles can be a serious infection that can lead to complications especially in young children and those with weakened immune systems. Due to longstanding sub-optimal vaccine uptake there is now a very real risk of seeing big outbreaks in London.

Measles spreads very easily but is preventable. To help protect ourselves, our families and those around us it is vital we all ensure we are vaccinated with 2 doses of the MMR vaccine, free on the NHS whatever your age. Parents can check their children’s red book to see if they are up to date or if you’re not sure anyone can call their GP practice. It’s important everyone is fully vaccinated before travelling overseas this summer.

Nobody wants to see their child or loved ones sick with measles, or put others who are more vulnerable, like babies, at risk. I urge those who have missed their MMR vaccines to catch-up now.”

Nursery Family Lunch

13th July 2023

Dear Parent / Carer

Nursery Family Lunch Wednesday 19th July

Following on from our successful Family Lunches we have decided to continue these events with a Nursery Family Lunch on Wednesday 19th July.  Parents/carers of children who stay for lunch in Mighty Oaks and Ladybugs on a Wednesday are welcome to come along and eat lunch with their child in the nursery.  A hot lunch is not available for parents to order, we ask that you bring in your own packed lunch from home. Please do not bring in takeaways.  A hot lunch is still available for your nursery child to order in the normal way.

We ask that you arrive to have lunch with your child in the nursery at 11.30am.  If you would like to collect your child from nursery to eat lunch with their sibling/s in school could you also pick them up at 11.30am.  Entry for the Mighty Oaks lunch is via the nursery garden (next to the school hall), for Ladybugs it is at the usual entrance for dropping off and collecting.

Kind regards

Nursery Staffing – September 2023

4.7.23

Dear Parent/Carers,

We would like to update you with regards to staffing in the Nursery from September.

We must inform you that Mrs Curnow will be sadly leaving Newdale at the end of this academic year.

Mrs Curnow has been a very valued member of our team for 9+  years and we know she will be missed by both the children, staff and families.

I know you will join us in wishing Mrs Curnow every success in her future.

We have been busy looking at our staffing structure and can assure you that the high-quality provision will continue in Mrs Curnow’s absence.

We will be welcoming Mrs Pablos into the team as the new Nursery teacher from September. Many of you will already know that Mrs Pablos is a current experienced teacher at Newdale and has already been busy working in Nursery to ensure a seamless transition.

We will also have the following staff changes:

Miss Mellisa Hodgetts will be moving from our Ladybugs room to work in the Reception classes from September.

We will welcome Mrs Kay Hawley who currently works in Year 2, to work in Ladybugs in her place.

Miss Kerrie Risk will move from Mighty Oaks to support a key group in Ladybugs.

We will also be welcoming Miss Sofia Ahmed to the Mighty Oaks team as new keyworker in September.

All members of staff are excited about their new roles.

Regards

Miss Cook

After School Club

5.5.23

Dear Parent / Carer of ASC,

We have recently carried out a full review of our procedures for collection of children in ASC. To ensure the highest levels of safety and reduce all risk, we are now going to be asking parents to physically collect their children in person rather than allowing children to exit on their own.  As a reminder, children collected up until 4.30pm exit from the main office doors, while children collected after 4.30pm will need to be collected from the back of the school hall doors.

We are very keen to support all of our working parents which is why our wrap around care opens at 7.30am and closes at 6.00pm.  This level of care is not common across many schools in Telford.  Our breakfast club and our ASC are presently at capacity with waiting lists on record.  It is a challenge for our dedicated wrap around staff to accommodate these high numbers.  As part of this review, it may well be decided that we have to reduce capacity in order to make our provision more streamlined.  We will notify you of any impact this may have as we approach the autumn term.  Clearly, we will continue to do all we can to support all working parents.

School and Nursery Closure – Friday 10th March

After a hair raising trip from Shrewsbury to Telford and a full site risk assessment with Mr Thomas, I have to make the decision to move to online learning today. Marlborough Way and Rock Road are treacherous and not at all safe. We have already had to rescue one person! I know the forecast is set to improve, but I don’t want an open then closed situation like yesterday as that is difficult for parents to plan around. I have let you know as early as possible. Teachers will be in touch. See you on Monday. Miss Cook.
