Wednesday’s phonics challenge

Today I thought it would be good to get your child moving.  Can you place pieces of paper across the floor, these are going to be your planets, and on them write simple words such as “dog”, “cat”, “pat” and “man”.  Tell your child that they are in a rocket and can only fly to the next planet if they read the word on the one they have landed on by segmenting and blending all of the sounds.  They might look at the word and say “m”, “u”, “g” “mug!”.  When they get to the last planet perhaps they could have a reward?

Nursery Video

🌟Once upon a time in a land far away,
The nursery children were sad they couldn’t come and play.
Our team thought and thought for a quite a little while,
And decided on a video to make you all smile.
So here is a message from us to you,
Remember we are proud of all that you do 🌟

Keep Smiling, The Nursery Team 💗

Value of the Month- May

Thank you for all your support with the value of the month for April, which was Freedom. Throughout April, children learnt about the different aspects of Freedom from rights and responsibilities to freedom of speech.

Our value of the month for May is Perseverance

What is Perseverance?

  • Not giving up even when faced with a problem.
  • Trying your best in all situations.
  • Realising that sometimes we are faced with challenges but trying to overcome these in the best way possible.

Suggestions for parents to work with children at home:

Discuss what the word means. Has your child ever been in a situation where they have demonstrated perseverance? If so, can they tell you strategies of how they didn’t give up?

Discuss with your child situations where people have shown perseverance and have achieved success e.g. family members, individuals with mobility difficulties, athletes etc.

Self-belief- discuss with your child how they feel about their learning and other skills and attributes. Talk about what they could do when faced with a challenge. It’s important that children learn the importance of perseverance even when faced with difficulties.

Here are a few websites which show how individuals have overcome difficulties and demonstrated Perseverance:

Please let your child’s teacher know if we can celebrate any work from home, on our school website.

Feedback on the values and what you do at home is really valuable to us and we really appreciate all your support.

Tuesday’s phonics challenge

We are segmenting again today by trying to get  Bob and Obb back together again.  To help reunite the aliens the children have to listen to a given word and segment the sounds and then type them.  Each time they spell a word correctly the space ship will move closer.  Do please help your child whenever they need you to for example, if there is a “c”, “k” or “ck” sound, they won’t know which one to type.  Good luck in reuniting the Obb and Bob on phonics play “space race” phase 2 level.

VE Day Friday 8th May

On Friday, the suggested activities for nursery will be to celebrate Victory in Europe day (VE day).

Great Britain was able to celebrate the end of the fighting in Europe during World War II on 8th May 1945, 75 years ago! This is an incredibly important celebration in our national history that we should remember.

As we are all at home, we thought we could suggest some activities that enables you to still celebrate in some way that could inspire children to explore the history behind VE day.

This could include:

Creating bunting and flags with poppies to decorate your homes with
Hosting an indoor street party
Ringing bells, cheering, hitting pots and pans at 12:00

Design a Medal

Union Jack Template Display Bunting

VE Day Colouring Page

VE Day Display Bunting

VE Day Editable Note

Wartime Recipe Booklet

Union-Jack-Colouring-Sheet

Monday’s phonics challenge

Happy Monday!  This week we are we are going to look at how we segment the sounds in words for example you know that “cat” is made of the sounds “c”, “a” and “t”.  In the first activity the children are asked to listen to a word and then segment it (use the pat the arm technique) and then type in those sounds to make the word.  They may need help to find the correct sound on the keyboard if you have one that shows capital letters.  The game is called “rocket rescue” on phonics play (choose phase 2 level) and each time they spell a word correctly they build the rocket until eventually it takes off.  Good luck with rescuing the rocket!

Letter from Miss Cook

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have proudly managed to stay open every single day since lockdown, in order to support our key worker children and families. We have consulted with all parents who use the hub and they have kindly managed to rearrange shifts etc so that we can officially close on Friday 8th May. The reasons for this are that we want all staff (especially those who are in every day) and all children, to have a day off linked to the ‘Victory for Europe’ (VE Day) celebrations. We feel that this is an important part of our history and one that needs to be recognised by everyone.

‘Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day or V-E Day, is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May 1945.’

Clearly we would have stayed open if key worker parents could not re-arrange shifts, as we remain committed to supporting everyone who is on the front line supporting us all in defeating Covid-19.

I know teachers and I would love to see any photos you showing what you got up to celebrating, but please remember that the Government rules stay the same – only leave the house to exercise, to collect essential food items and to collect necessary medical supplies.

Enjoy the day everyone, but stay safe.

Miss Cook
