Year 2 Home Learning Monday 11th May 2020

Hello Year 2!

We hope you have had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend and enjoyed all of your VE Day celebrations. 🇬🇧 Here are today’s activities.

Spellings – In spellings this week we will be revisiting one of the tricky rules from Spring term, ‘words ending with al’.

Your work today is to complete the quiz set on Purple Mash.

Literacy – Today’s task is to complete ‘The Dancer and the Baker’ task on purple mash.  You should find it in your 2do section.  You will need to apply your knowledge of nouns, verbs and adjectives.  Here is a little reminder:

Maths – this week we will be continuing to use the White Rose materials.  Today’s learning will look at adding and subtracting tens.

Phonics Activity Ideas

Busy Bee is extremely busy today collecting pollen in order to make us some delicious honey. So, I thought I would share some fun phonics activities that you could do at home with a little bit of help from your adult. You could;

  • Play ‘rainbow hop’. Use coloured paper, one die and a marker to create a stepping stone for every sound in the phase you are working on.
  • Play ‘sound ball’. Your adult calls out a sound and you respond with a word that contains it. Then your adult throws the ball to you and you give them a sound to think about.
  • ‘Washingline phonics’. Using pegs, paper, and a marker you could create a phonics washing line.
  • Phonics photo hunt. You could create a photo album with a picture for every sound. For example, a train for the ‘ai’ sound.
  • Spin and rhyme. Using a paper towel roll and clothes hanger your adult can write a word and see how many rhyming words you can add.
  • Mystery bag. Place objects in a bag. As your adult pulls the items out, see if you can guess the mystery sound that unites all the objects.
  • Say 2 words. Your adult says 2 words that contain the same sound and you must stand up as quickly as you can. Stay seated if they do not.
  • Monster names. Replace the first letter of your name with a phonics sound. For example, Miss Hammond could become Mad Monster Quammond! You could stomp around like a monster with your new name!
  • Smack the letter. Use a fly swatter (or equivalent) and hit sounds written on sticky notes when your adult pronounces them.
  • Phonics I Spy. Fill a large juice bottle with a variety of small items that contain various sounds, use rice or sand to fill the remaining space. Have your adult name a sound, shake the bottle, and hunt the correct item.

Citizenship Themed Week – W.B 11.05.20

Last week, we enjoyed looking at all of the fantastic work which had been produced based on our Geography themed week.

VE Day Junk Modelling Challenge

As it is VE Day tomorrow, you may like to take part in a JUNK MODELLING CHALLENGE that has been launched by the museum at RAF Cosford. The challenge is to build your very own aircraft, using whatever you can find around your home! In school, pupils from Nursery to Year 6 love junk modelling so I am sure many children would love to have a go at this at home – it would even be a nice project for siblings, or whole families, to work on together! 🛫🛫

The competition deadline is Thursday 14th May. To enter your aircraft, all you need to do is post a photo of your creation in the comments on the competition post, which can be found at ‘The Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford‘ Facebook page. Alternatively, you can share your photo using the tag ‘@rafmuseum‘ on Facebook.

Year 2 Home Learning Wednesday 6th May

Hello Year 2!

Happy Wednesday! Here are today’s activities.

Spellings – the spelling rule for this week is possessive apostrophes.

Today we want you to play the roll and spell dice game with your spellings.

Literacy – On Friday it will be the 75th anniversary of VE day so this week in Literacy we will be completing work all about it.  Today we would like you complete this reading comprehension about the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

Wednesday Comprehension

Maths – this week we will be continuing to use the White Rose materials.  Today’s learning will look at related number facts.

Value of the Month- May

Thank you for all your support with the value of the month for April, which was Freedom. Throughout April, children learnt about the different aspects of Freedom from rights and responsibilities to freedom of speech.

Our value of the month for May is Perseverance

What is Perseverance?

  • Not giving up even when faced with a problem.
  • Trying your best in all situations.
  • Realising that sometimes we are faced with challenges but trying to overcome these in the best way possible.

Suggestions for parents to work with children at home:

Discuss what the word means. Has your child ever been in a situation where they have demonstrated perseverance? If so, can they tell you strategies of how they didn’t give up?

Discuss with your child situations where people have shown perseverance and have achieved success e.g. family members, individuals with mobility difficulties, athletes etc.

Self-belief- discuss with your child how they feel about their learning and other skills and attributes. Talk about what they could do when faced with a challenge. It’s important that children learn the importance of perseverance even when faced with difficulties.

Helpful Books for Younger Children

It can be quite challenging to explain to children (particularly younger children) about what is going on in the world at the moment. To help find the right words to explain why we need to wash our hands so frequently and the reasons why we are having to stay at home, here are two more fantastic books to help:
