Secondary School Applications – September 2023

The closing date for secondary school applications is 31st October 2022

Parent / Carers can submit up to four preference schools on the application and we encourage parents to apply for more than one school as if Admissions are unable to offer their preferred school they may be allocated a school that is some distance away if their catchment school is already full.  Each year Admissions see a lot of applications that have only one preference which can lead to a lot of disappointment when allocated a school some distance from their home address.

Arthog Reminders

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our visit to Arthog is fast approach and we hope your child is looking forward to it as much as we are!

Please can all year 6 children arrive at the assembly hall doors on Monday 10th October at the usual time. Staff will be at the main school gates for the children to leave their luggage rather than bring it up to school. Please try to avoid blocking any main paths with the luggage.

A polite reminder that all medication and the £10 tuck shop money should be handed into the school office by this Friday (7th October), unless essential medication is needed over the weekend.

Please ensure children bring a packed lunch with them on Monday as this will not be provided and they will be able to eat once we arrive at Arthog, before starting their activities.

If your child gets travel sick, we recommend they have an anti-sickness tablet before school and bring a plastic bag with them, should they need it. We will ensure any child prone to travel sickness is sat at the front with staff and a friend.

We will keep you updated via the school website regarding our arrival time on Friday 14th, but we aim to be back in school for 3.10pm, however this may change depending on traffic.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Mr McFarland and Miss Jones.

The Harvest GATEway Project

3.10.22

Dear Parents and Carers,

This year for Harvest, we are collecting as usual, but in the spirit of supporting our immediate community, we have decided that we want this to be even closer to home and support our own school community in these times of ever-increasing cost of living for everyone.

We will be collecting non-perishable donations (tins of food, toilet rolls, toiletries etc.) for a ‘give and take’ bank – hence the name GATEway (Give And TakE)!

With the contributions that are generously shared by parents, staff and governors, we will be setting up a regularly replenished box of non-perishable items – into which you can add items (box 1) if you can; or take items (box 2) should you need. These boxes will be outside the main office in the parent shelter.

If you can give something, please add it to the box. The box will be based on trust and not manned, and we are very much hoping that it may support those in need as we move into the winter months and while the cost of living is ever more.

Our project will launch during Harvest and we will notify you when the ‘Give and Take’ boxes are in place.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Year 6 Arthog Updates

Dear Parents/ Carers,

The time for Arthog is fast approaching! As you know, we will be visiting Arthog the week beginning Monday 10th October. We will be travelling by coach, which will depart from school at just after 9:00 (to be confirmed). Please arrive at school at the normal time, however your child should come to the entrance of the sports hall so we can complete the register. Children will be required to bring a packed lunch for the outward journey. Please bring this in a disposable bag NOT a lunch box. If your child is likely to be travel sick, please give them a tablet first thing in the morning and let us know if they will require one for the return journey.

Other information:

  • Children can bring a maximum of £10 spending money in a clearly named, re-sealable moneybag so that any money that your child does not spend can be easily returned to you. Arthog have advised us to include some change in this as they have not got a lot! (Perhaps made up of a £5 note, 4x £1 coins and a pound in silver change.) This needs to be brought into the school office by Friday 7th October. It will be kept in a locked safe, until the opportunity arises for children to visit the shop at Arthog.
  • If your child takes regular medication, you need to ensure that a medical form has been completed – we cannot administer medication without your consent. Thank you to those who have sent these in already. All medication needs to be given to school along with the completed form by Friday 7th October. We will not have time to chase and collate this on the morning of our departure. Asthmatic children and those with epi-pens will be given the school pouch they normally use in which to always keep their medication with them. If your child has an epi-pen, we will need to take three with us please.
  • Please ensure that your child does not bring a mobile phone, electronic device or camera; if they do, such items will be taken from children and returned to you when we get back to school. This is to avoid the danger of them being lost or damaged but more importantly is a matter of safeguarding.
  • Please do not give your children any snacks. for their time at Arthog. They will be very well fed with meals of a very high standard and there is always a choice on offer. We also need to ensure that the children have a restful night’s sleep!
  • Please remember to pack plenty of pairs of socks, including thick ones for wellies/ walking boots.

On the morning of the 10th, children need to come to school in casual clothes that are suitable for outdoor activities (no jeans please!). In previous years, children have chosen to wear the Arthog hoodies if they have ordered them.

The following Newdale staff members are going on the trip all week and will each support a group of children along with their instructor from the centre: Mr. McFarland, Miss Jones, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Goodwin, and Miss Marshall.

Rest assured that no news is always good news! Throughout the week, we will post daily updates on the school website via the school office. Please note that due to a poor internet connection at the site and our busy schedule, we find it difficult to post many photos of children. However, we will do our very best!

The group should return to school at about 3:20pm on Friday 14th October. Please ensure you are on time to collect your child from school – they will be tired and excited to see their families! Please keep an eye on text messages and the website for updates of arrival times should there be any delays.

We hope you have a restful week while your children are enjoying their week at Arthog!

Mr McFarland and Miss Jones.

Polite reminder when parking on school site

A polite reminder that the side entrance to the staff parking area and the staff parking area itself, should only be used by Newdale members of staff. If for any reason you are driving onto the school site, please slowly enter and exit through the main school gate and use our visitor parking area only.

Many thanks

Safer, Stronger Communities feedback

21.9.22

Dear Parents & Carers,

Early last term we sent out a survey asking for your ideas on how we could support improving our local community spaces. Thank you to all of those parents who spent the time filling in a response. We really do value your views. The surveys were sent to the Stronger Communities team, and they wanted me to update you on the action that has been taken so far linked to the Overdale area.

  • The new camera is now up and overlooks the MUGA and playground at the field.
  • The new camera that will cover the path and area of the Rock Road play park should be up in the next four weeks.
  • The Carpenter Centre is now open and ready for people of the area to hire it when it is available.
  • A resident drop-in session has been scheduled in for October 11th from 5.30pm – 7pm. This session is for residents to speak with ward councillors and also parish council staff as well as members of the Stronger Communities team about issues in the area and activities they would like to see developed.
  • The Stronger Communities team is working on a project with councillors to improve accessibility and mobility for residents (more information to follow).
  • The first Overdale & Ketley Neighbourhood Crime Reduction meeting has very recently been held. This was a Teams meeting with police, ward members, parish councillors, Anti-social behaviour and Enforcement Teams in attendance. Other meetings have been scheduled for the future and we hope that representatives from school will also attend.

We do hope you can see that your survey responses did indeed initiate actions happening in our local community. We continue to work closely with the Stronger Communities teams and are more than happy to pass on any further suggestions you have in making our local community an even better place to live and let our children play.

Kind regards

Expect Respect Week

A key aspect of our curriculum at Newdale is to educate children about how to stay safe. One of the many ways in which we do this is through themed weeks. Next week is Expect Respect Week. During this week, we work sensitively with children, looking at the importance of healthy, non-violent relationships.

Why we have Expect Respect Week

Unfortunately, domestic abuse is a widespread social problem that impacts children and young people’s lives directly in many ways. One in seven (14.2%) children and young people under the age of 18 will have lived with domestic violence at some point in their childhood, with damaging impact on every area of children and young people’s lives.

Learning about what positive relationships are is important from a young age. Such lessons can help to support children’s understanding of what healthy, non-violent relationships look like.

What staff do at Newdale to help keep children safe, with regards to domestic abuse:

  • Have up-to-date knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse
  • Support children to seek help and safety
  • Model and promote healthy, non-violent relationships
  • Report disclosures by following our safeguarding procedures

All professionals working with children and young people have a role to play in supporting children in a safe, open environment. Each session is designed to be active, fun and engaging. Many of the session plans do not raise domestic abuse directly. Please see below for the theme for each year group. Please feel assured that the sessions are very much age-appropriate for your child.

Year Group Theme
Nursery Sharing of books which challenge gender stereotypes/role play jobs.
Reception Looking at and challenging gender stereotypes using toys
Year 1 Friends, secrets and people who help us
Year 2 Gender, careers and assumptions
Year 3 Resolving conflict and where to get help
Year 4 Examining violence, excuses and responsibility
Year 5 Secrets and stories
Year 6 Courtroom game and My identify online

We know the value of preventative work and the real importance that early conversations can have on children and young people’s lives. I am pleased that we can engage with prevention work to address gender-based violence from its roots.

If you need more information, or are suffering from the effects of domestic abuse, please contact the school or visit https://www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk/ for further support and guidance.

Yours sincerely,

Miss R Cook
