Polite reminder – forgotten items

14.3.23

Dear parents/carers,

We know that things get forgotten, but recently, we seem to be busier than usual with things like PE kits, lunches and water bottles that have been left at home.

Please could we ask that you check carefully each day, as this has the biggest impact on our office staff who are already very busy.

We do have a certain amount of spare PE kit in school, and children can always have access to water throughout the day.

Kind regards,

Miss Cook

Year 6 – Preparing for SATs

14.3.23

Dear parents/carers,

We are already approaching the final term of your child’s primary schooling! The summer term is an exciting time, with SATs, end of year activities and transition to secondary schools and new beginnings.

Preparing for the SAT tests:

  • First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing at all to worry about. At Newdale, we prepare for SATs through regular, related activities – no child will do anything they have not already done during SAT week (except maybe eat some biscuits at breaktime!). Our experience has always been that the children all enjoy the opportunity to show off all their learning from their years at primary school.
  • Please ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Missed sessions can affect so much and make future learning activities harder. Every day in the run up and during SATs, really does count.
  • Support your child with homework – this can simply be encouraging them to have a go. Also encourage them to ask their teachers if they need help – that is what we are here for and we want to help.
  • Reading, spelling and arithmetic practise (e.g. times tables) are always beneficial – building resilience and stamina are key, especially in reading – the reading SAT is an hour long.
  • Talk to your child about what they have been learning and what books they are reading (for example the characters, plot, their opinions)
  • Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast each morning, so they have a good start to every day.

We are already proud of the effort every child in year 6 has already put into their schoolwork this year. We know they are well on the way to being prepared for their next steps. While the ideas above will directly support SAT week, they are also key to a successful transition into secondary school.

Please remember to contact your child’s teachers with any queries.

Kind regards,

Miss Cook

SEND Provision

Telford and Wrekin Local Authority have recently been contacted by OFSTED and the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to say that they will be visiting our area to inspect the local arrangements for children and young people with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) between 16 – 24 March 2023. This joint inspection will consider education and care council services, schools, early years providers, post 16 settings and health providers.

If you have a child with SEND, have your say on the support that they receive within Telford and Wrekin by completing the following survey:

Area SEND inspection for Telford & Wrekin Council (smartsurvey.co.uk)

The surveys are open from now until 9am on 14th March 2023.

Weather update

Morning! ❄️
The weather forecast is still varied depending on which site you look at. We are now making the decision to cancel all after school provision for today. This includes all Crossbar, nursery/school after school club and the Tophat drama club. All teacher led clubs are also cancelled. Parents evening appointments today will be via telephone or will be postponed. Your child’s teacher will let you know. We are still monitoring the situation carefully and will update on a regular basis.
Kind regards
Miss Cook

Water Safety

On Monday, our children learnt all about the importance of water safety from three search and rescue volunteers. Members of the West Mercia Search and Rescue delivered assemblies to teach the children about their role and of the importance of keeping safe near water. They also showed the children their special rescue equipment including their rescue boats.

To find out more about water safety, please can you…

Ask your child what position they should get into if they find themselves getting into difficulty in water (a starfish)

Ask your child what they should do if they see someone in difficulty in water (call for help, do not enter the water, talk to the person to reassure them, use a throw line if confident).

Children were reminded about the importance of staying away from water, unless in a controlled environment, such as a swimming session with adults present.

For more information about water safety, including the option of completing an online course, please visit: https://westmerciasar.org.uk/ or https://www.facebook.com/wmsar/?locale=en_GB

Parent’s Evening Week

3.3.23

Dear Parent/Carers,

Many of you have already booked in your parents evening appointments.

These meetings are key, as they ensure that as parents, you are up to date on where your child is at with their learning and what you can do at home to support further progress. You are welcome to spend time before and after your consultation to look through your child’s books.

Please note however that all our classes are full or over full and therefore teachers have to be quite strict on timings. Each appointment is 10 minutes long (which is in line with all other schools). If you feel you really do need more time after this 10-minute slot you would need to arrange another meeting at a different time.

If possible, please leave pushchairs and siblings who do not attend Newdale at home. As you know, we have narrow corridors and very limited space. Please also only attend appointments for your own children. We have a duty around data protection, and it can put teachers into an awkward situation if someone is present who is not a direct family member.

Many thanks for your support,

Miss Cook
