Reception’s Snow Day Learning

Wow, we are so lucky to have had some more snow fall overnight and we can’t wait to see what you get up to today! We know you will be wrapping up warm and making the most of the snow. Please share lots of pictures/videos on Evidence Me if you can as we would all love to see what you have been up to. These are lots of ideas for what you might want to do today.

Build a snowman: Can you count how many buttons your snowman has? How many buttons would your snowman have if you added one more? How many buttons would your snowman have if you had one less? Is your snowman smaller than you? Is your snowman taller than you?

The Three Billy Goats Gruff: We have been reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff this week and we know that the goats wanted to cross the bridge because they had no more grass to eat. Lots of other animals will find it tricky to find food today in the snow. Can you help to feed them? Maybe you could feed the birds?

Can you draw a picture of the troll? Is he big? Is he bad? Is he mad? Can you write these words next to your troll using your Fred Fingers?

Physical Development: Yesterday, we noticed that lots of you needed help with your gloves and zipping up your coats. Today is the perfect day to practise. If you get good at it, maybe you could set a timer and see how fast you can get yourself ready for the snow!

You might want to have a snowball throwing competition. You have been working hard on your underarm throwing and cup catching in PE. How far can you throw a snowball? Can you beat your last throw? Can you catch a snowball?

Can you make a snow angel?

If you are wanting to get active inside instead, these are some fun snow themed movement breaks.

One Less Than: This week we have been finding one less. Can you line up some of your toys at home? You might want to use teddies or cars, you can choose anything. Count how many toys you have put in the line, take one away and see how many you have left?

Letter formation: Use the videos to remind your of the rhymes and practise writing your letters. You could air write, write it on paper or even write it in the snow! You could use a stick so you don’t get chilly fingers! This is the link to the videos: ‘a’ letter formation

Phonics: Here are some Fred Games to play to practise your blending. https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/SnvL4bgt/5yVhiwhf

Story Time: After a chilly day playing in the snow, why don’t you snuggle up under a blanket a share a story with someone at home?

Have a wonderful day in the snow.

School Closure

Apologies for the delay in sending this. Miss Cook was on her way to assess the school site but got stuck in the snow.

Due to the adverse weather conditions and the current unsafe accessibility onto our school site, we are forced to make the decision to close the school. Learning will be online today. Please await further information from your child’s class teacher via the school website.

Wider personal development: school trips and visits

We are passionate about the children experiencing education outside of the classroom which is why we put on so many exciting trips for all year groups throughout the year. Providing meaningful experiences can not only support children with their learning back in the classroom but it provides valuable opportunities for children to develop skills such as teamwork, resilience, to gain a better understanding of our world and most importantly, to have fun!

Please visit Parent Pay to see if your child has an up-and-coming trip. This term we have both cinema and pantomime trips organised as well as Christmas events at school! How exciting!

Just a reminder that we have a school Facebook page where you can find regular updates such as photos from trips.

Winter illness information for parents/carers

Please see below information from the Health Protection Hub we have been asked to forward to parents/carers.

Teaching good hygiene habits

Parents/carers are urged to encourage good hygiene habits in their families, such as handwashing and using a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes. Regularly washing hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds or using hand sanitiser when convenient, is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of germs.

Knowing when to keep your child at home and when to send them to school

Children are encouraged to stay in school or nursery with symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or slight cough (if otherwise well and do not have a high temperature), but should stay at home if they feel too unwell to attend and/or if they have a fever.  They should stay home until the fever has passed and they are well enough to attend.  If they have diarrhoea and/or vomiting they should stay home for at least 48 hours after these symptoms clear up.  Let the school know if your child is diagnosed with other illnesses such as scarlet fever and they can advise you how for long your child should stay off school.

Stopping the spread of stomach bugs

Stomach bugs spread easily in schools and nurseries. If you or your child have diarrhoea and/or vomiting, washing hands with soap and warm water and using bleach-based products to clean surfaces will help stop infections from spreading. Don’t prepare food for others if you have such symptoms or for 48 hours after symptoms stop. If you are unwell, you should also avoid visiting people in hospitals and care homes to avoid passing on the infection to those more vulnerable. It’s important not to return to school, nursery or work until 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.

Getting vaccinated

Infections such as flu, which see a seasonal increase in winter, are easily protected against with vaccination. All primary school age children, those aged 2 years (who have turned 2 years old before the  1 September 2024) all 3 year olds and secondary school children from Year 7 to Year 11 are eligible for the flu vaccine.  This will protect the children themselves, the school community and elderly relatives.

It’s also important to ensure your children are up-to-date with their routine vaccinations, which protect against diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria and polio. If you are unsure of your child’s vaccination status, you can check their “red book” or contact their GP.

NHS UK also provides easily accessible guidance for parents to help manage winter illness at home.

Just a few reminders:

  • We do not permit parents to use their mobile phones on site at any time for safeguarding reasons.
  • Year 5 and 6 children are permitted to bring in mobile phones to use in an emergency if they travel independently to and from school. These phones MUST be handed in to the teaching assistant as soon as they arrive at school. They will be locked in the office and then returned at home time. We do not take any responsibility for any mobile phones that are not handed in. All children in all other year groups should not have a phone on site unless discussed and agreed with the teaching team.
  • Year 3 children who are not registered as Free School Meals now have to pay for their dinners. If you need more details or believe you may qualify for Free School Meals, please call the office on 01952 387720.
  • Nail varnish and what we deem as ‘extreme’ hair styles are not permitted whilst the children attend school.
  • Small stud earrings are permitted, but should be removed on PE days. If this is not possible, they will be taped for PE in line with health and safety regulations. Please ensure all other types of earrings are left for weekend and holiday use.
  • PE kits – We are continuing to allow children to come to school in PE kits on their PE days. Please see the website or email your year group teachers for information around this and anything else to do with the lessons your children have.

Please remember that classroom doors open at 8:35am and registers are taken at 8:40am.

Thank you for your continued support.

Miss Cook

Reception – staff news

Dear Parents/Carers of Reception children,

Miss Hodgetts is very pleased to announce that she is expecting her first bundle of joy.

We all hope that Miss Hodgetts will be able to continue supporting her class until close to February half term, at which point she will begin her maternity leave.

We are really lucky to have two teaching assistants in each of our Reception classes. We will be looking very carefully at the cohort and staffing we have, in order to ensure the continued high quality provision over the rest of the year.

We all wish Miss Hodgetts and her family the very best of luck.

Kind regards,

Miss Cook
