Year 1 Reading

Good afternoon,

The children in Year 1 have been working really hard so far this half term. All the children are participating in their RWI reading groups each day. We would just like to remind parents that the expectation in Year 1 is a minimum of 3 reads a week and is really important to be reading their coloured RWI books. In particular we encourage them to read their coloured RWI Book Bag book 3 times a week. Reading these regularly supports the children to become more fluent with their specific set sounds they are working on which link to the books they are reading in class.

Please remember to write their reads in the reading diaries as these are checked daily and additional questions are added for children to discuss with you at home.

Thank you

Year 1 team :)

Curriculum Governor Involvement

The Curriculum Governors met yesterday and put a spotlight on the curriculum areas of RE and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Children came to share their knowledge and understanding of RE and did a fabulous job. Governors have confidence that the new guidelines for RSE are on track to be implemented over this year. Governors went on a tour of our Nursery provision and were super impressed with the engagement of our youngest learners. Nursery environments look amazing and staff are clearly working tirelessly to ensure that the children gain the strongest of foundations before they move into school.

Movie Nights

To raise money towards activities for the Healthy Lifestyles Week (held in June), members of School Parliament have once again organised fundraising film nights. Movie Nights will take place on the below dates from 3:10pm – 5pm.

Year 1,2 & 3 – Tuesday 21st October

Year 4, 5 & 6 – Tuesday 14th October

The children will be watching Despicable Me 4 (PG) At the end of the film, please collect children from their own classrooms as usual.

Thank you

Reception to Year 5 Stay and Share for Parents/Carers

We are really looking forward to our ‘Stay and Share’ session (Reception to Y5) on Thursday 9th October at 2:45pm. Please enter your child’s classroom from their usual drop off/pick up location (Years R, 2, 3, and 5 parents should enter from the playground classroom doors, Year 1 and Mrs Everall’s classes’ can be accessed from the decking and Mr Stubbs’ class from the stairs by the Visitor Car Park). Playground gates will open at 2:45pm. Due to space constraints, we are only able to accommodate one parent/carer per child. Attendance must be confirmed through ParentPay so staff are aware of expected numbers on the day.  For this event, the children will remain in their classrooms, so if you are visiting more than one child, you will be able to move between the classrooms and spend some time with them individually. We look forward to seeing you all and the children can’t wait to share their learning with you.

Year 1 Phonics Assembly

Good evening. We would like to invite you to our Year 1 Phonics Assembly. We will be sharing what we do in a Read Write Inc Phonics Session and with the help of the children we will be teaching you how to read and spell  tricky words. The assembly will be held at 2.30 on Wednesday 15th October. If you are not able to attend please do not worry , we will be emailing out some relevant resources.

Many thanks

Reminder – Grandparent’s Stay & Share Event – tomorrow

On Thursday 25th September, we will be inviting Grandparent’s in for a ‘Stay and Share’ session with their grandchild/children. The drop in will be a lovely opportunity for children to share their learning so far and spend time with their grandparent/s in school.

We will have two sittings:

Reception to Year 2 children – 1:15 – 2:15pm

Year 3 – Year 6 children – 2:15pm

Where grandparents have grandchildren in more than one year group, please attend the time of the older child (e.g. a grandparent visiting children in Year 2 and Year 4 should come at 2:15pm).

Class teachers will have class lists of who has consent and who doesn’t to leave with Grandparents. When they are ready to leave, grandparents must let class teachers know so that they can tick them off their list. If you have not specified on ParentPay if your child/children can leave with their grandparents, please add a note in their reading diary this evening.

We kindly ask that if a grandparent would like a hot drink, that they bring their own mug to help reduce waste/costs rather than the school purchasing single use cups.

With regards to parking on school site, this will be on a first come first served basis for blue badge holders.

Please note, this is an event for Grandparent’s only.

We look forward to welcoming everyone!

Many thanks

Miss Cook

Year 1 School Council Elections

Today we had a fabulous day writing our own manifestos about how kind we are and how we would be a super school council member. We then listened to the 5 children who opted to take part. Well done you were super brave sharing your ideas and I loved your slogans! Well Done to Hilda and Kobie for being our new school council members and to the children who didn’t get chosen too, you were amazing sports. Well done Year 1!

Safeguarding, Health & Safety Governor Involvement

The Safeguarding and Health & Safety Governors met on 22nd September 2025. They carried out a ‘pupil voice’ activity with some KS 1 children, discussing behaviour around school. The children were very clear about the BeSMART code and could tell the Governors all about why it is good to behave in school and about what happens when something might go wrong.

The Governors reviewed part of a safeguarding audit with the Headteacher and as a result set some new agenda items for next time.

They received information following a ‘spot check’ that was carried out linked to Asthma and Epi Pen use across the school and were happy with how all staff are undergoing the new Tier one Asthma training before Christmas.

Governors are looking forward to spending time around the school site collecting some first-hand parent voice in November.
