Black Country Living Museum

Year 4 had such a wonderful day out at the Black Country Living Museum last week. We all went for a walk through an underground mine. It was quite scary but we really enjoyed experiencing what it would have been like to work in a coal mine.  We also visited an Industrial Revolution street and popped into some of the shops, attended a Victorian school lesson (on our best behaviour!) and played some traditional games.

Building bridges in STEM club

We learnt today how to roll paper to create stiffness. This made our bridges far stronger than when we just used flat paper.

NSPCC Number Day – Friday 2nd February

NSPCC Number Day 2024 Information

Don’t forget, Newdale are taking part in this year’s NSPCC Number Day!  All of our pupils, from Nursery up to Year 6, will enjoy a variety of Maths activities, maths stories and competitions on Friday. Years 2 – 6 will be involved in a Times Tables Rockstars Battle too.

To raise money for the NSPCC and support all of the important work that they do, we are inviting all children  to dress down in number-themed outfits on Friday. The donation for this can be made on ParentPay. Thank you in advance for your support.

Safeguarding, Heath & Safety Governors Committee

The Safeguarding, Health & Safety governors met last Thursday and really enjoyed listening to the views of girls from reception, Year 2, 4 and 6. Governors asked many questions about lunchtime and break time activities. Children responded confidently about what there is to do both indoors and outdoors. They knew what to do should a ‘dangerous situation’ arise and what to do should they come across damaged resources. Year 6 are going to report back to Miss Cook about ideas for interactive games that they could use in their outdoor area. Governors reviewed the food standards documentation and look forward to pupil voice and menu analysis as part of the next committee meeting.

STEM club – Parachutes

Yesterday at STEM club, the children created their own parachutes. They experimented with shape and size whilst some also added holes which stabilised the air flow. We discussed how the parachute uses air resistance to counteract the force of gravity. We certainly enjoyed testing their creations!

Governors feedback linked to the Curriculum meeting

Governors were delighted to talk to enthusiastic Geographers from Reception to Year 6. Children were very knowledgeable about topics such as volcanoes, earthquakes, Mount Everest, capital cities and details around maps.

Governors could see clearly that the children in our nursery provision have a high-quality offer with exciting resources and stimulating environments.

Governors want to celebrate the swimming offer with you – please see below the report created by Miss Jones our PE lead.

Swimming Update January 2024

Governors had an in depth look at the After School Club provision and were impressed with the overall offer including the carefully thought-out snack menu, planned trips and exciting activities for the children. Governors agreed to release more funding to further resource our After School Club.

Measles

Cases of measles are increasing in the UK, including in the West Midlands, and it’s likely that there will be cases in Telford in the near future.

Measles is a viral illness that can be serious and sometimes fatal. Spending 15 minutes with someone with measles is enough to get the virus. Symptoms of measles include high fever, runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, small red spots with a bluish-white centre inside the mouth. A rash can appear later, usually on the face, upper neck, hands and feet, fading after 5 to 6 days. If you’ve not been vaccinated against measles you can be at risk, but it’s most common in young children. Someone with measles can spread the virus up to 4 days before a rash appears, and up to 4 days after.

Measles can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences, so make sure you and your children are up to date with MMR vaccinations, and ask your GP about catch-up jabs if needed. The MMR vaccine is highly effective at protecting against measles.

If you are unsure if your child is up to date with all their routine vaccinations you can check their Red Book (personal child health record) in the first instance. If you are still not sure, or if you need to bring your child up to date with their vaccines, you should contact their GP practice to check and book an appointment.

If you are concerned that your child has measles, please call your GP in the first instance, to reduce the risk of passing the disease to others in the waiting room.  More information on measles can be found here and information on the MMR vaccine can be found here .

UKHSA have advised that a significant percentage of unvaccinated children who have contracted measles have been hospitalized, which highlights the severity of the issue.  Other learnings are how protective two doses of the MMR vaccine are, and how disruptive the long exclusion period can be for unvaccinated contacts.

Anyone without immunity from vaccination or previous infection, identified via contact tracing as a contact of a measles case, would be required to stay away from the setting for up to 21 days.   This would have significant implications for your business continuity and for affected staff members personally. Given the risk to staff working with children, we would advise that they check their vaccination status and catch up with any missed vaccines.  More information is provided here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/mmr-vaccine/

If you suspect you have a measles case in the setting, or are advised by a parent/carer that their child has measles, please contact the Health Protection Hub on 01952 381800 or HealthProtectionHub@telford.gov.uk  Useful information to have ready would be:

  • Name of child
  • Date of birth
  • Class/room
  • Name and contact details of parent/carer
  • Date of onset of rash (if known)
  • MMR status of child (zero, one or both vaccinations) (if known)
  • Any known vulnerable pupils or staff in the class/year group (including pregnant staff)
