The importance of breakfast

Morning routines can be frantic and rushed, trying to locate book bags and coats but one aspect which is important not to forget is breakfast.

Research shows that, on average, 2 pupils in every class in England and Wales will arrive at school hungry at least once a week. If a child arrives at school hungry, they lose one hour of learning time a day. Thinking about that over a longer term, if a child arrived at school hungry once a week they would almost 9 weeks of learning time (70 per cent of a term) over the whole of their primary school life.

It is so important that children have a nutritional breakfast before they come to school. A healthy and balanced breakfast can provide the refuelling your child needs to make the most of the day ahead. Where possible, please try and avoid overly sugary cereals (easier said than done we know!). Breakfast foods such as cereals with added iron, wholegrain breads, eggs and raisins are all good sources of iron.

Please encourage your children to have breakfast before coming to school – it really is important!

Y4 Home Learning

If your child is self-isolating due to a family member displaying symptoms, please find attached ideas to support your child at home with their learning. Please note that if your child is self-isolating because they are displaying symptoms, we wouldn’t expect them to complete the tasks if they are feeling unwell.

Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND) update

Dear Parents and Carers,

Due to the current Covid 19 restrictions we are sadly unable to host our termly SEND parent and carer ‘drop in’ sessions. Usually Parents and Carers are invited to come to The Den to speak to Miss Plimmer (our SENDCO) and Mrs Powell (Inclusion Manager) about their child’s needs and progress.

This term we are proposing that following your Parents Evening telephone call with class teachers in the coming weeks, you can request a telephone call from Miss Plimmer and Mrs Powell to talk specifically about SEND needs.

To request a phone call between 3pm-4pm or 4:30pm-5:30pm on Thursday 22nd October, please send an email requesting a time slot to Miss Plimmer’s SEND email address: newdalesendco@taw.org.uk or ring the office and ask them to pass on the message 01952 387720.

Kind regards,

Miss Plimmer
