Staff News

Dear Parents/Carers,

As much as I would like to retain all members of the fabulous Newdale team, unfortunately I cannot!

It is with huge sadness, but also huge congratulations, that I have to inform you that Mrs Thomas will be leaving us this Summer.

Mrs Thomas has been successful in gaining a really exciting promoted post and I know you will join me in wishing her the very best of luck.

Mrs Thomas joined Newdale in 2012 and has spent the last 6 years in the position of Assistant Headteacher. She has made a very significant contribution to so many areas of our school development and her experience in education will be gratefully received in her new school.

We have already put plans in place to ensure continued stability when she leaves.

Kind regards,

Miss Cook

Year 5 trip to Severn Valley Country Park

Year 5 had a great trip to Severn Valley Country Park yesterday. We were really pleased with their behaviour and how well they represented Newdale. The instructor was particularly impressed with their excellent knowledge of rivers!

Year 4 – Times Tables Update

Year 4 – Half-Term Times Tables Practice

As you will all be aware, all Year 4s complete a Multiplication Times Table Check to ensure that they can recall their times tables facts accurately and at speed. We are so proud of our Year 4 pupils because they have all made excellent progress and the adults at school sometimes struggle to keep up with the speed at which they can recall their times tables!

The Multiplication Times Table Check is shortly after the half-term break (week commencing Monday 10th June). To ensure that our pupils keep up with their speedy recall, we have set an Ultimate Battle of the Bands between the two Year 4 classes. The winning class will receive a prize in the first week back!

In addition to this, please encourage times table games within your household (this may be testing each other on a mixture of times table questions, writing the multiples of a number out on paper and racing to splat the correct answer to a question, writing times tables facts onto the patio with chalks etc.). Please speak to your child’s class teachers if you would like some more inspiration for fun times table practise.

Please also use the following website to practise recall and experience what the real Multiplication check will feel like.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Year 1 Trip To Dudley Zoo and Castle

Tomorrow, we are off to Dudley Zoo and Castle.

In the morning, please drop your child in the usual place at 8:20am. Your child will need to have a small backpack with their water bottle, and packed lunch if you have opted for this. Your child must have a waterproof coat with them! Your child will be walking around the zoo and castle all day so may wish to wear suitable trainers instead of their school shoes.

We will return in time for normal dismissal.

School Swimming Lessons

Dear Parents / Carers,

During primary school, all children are required to have a block of swimming lessons. We believe swimming is an extremely important skill for your child to learn as it is one physical activity that can save lives.

Our swimming programme aims to achieve the following objectives for your child:

  • To develop water confidence and water safety skills;
  • To master basic stroke techniques and swim 25 metres;
  • To participate in an enjoyable social activity;
  • To participate in activities which can help improve health and fitness.

As a parent/carer you play a vital role in encouraging your child to swim and to help them learn about water safety, survival and lifesaving. Growing their water confidence will mean they progress more quickly so as to gain skills that will keep them safe around water.

There are several ways you could support your child:

  • go swimming as a family;
  • get them to put their face in water and blow bubbles whilst in the bath or shower;
  • talk about water safety with your child and tell them how important it is;
  • ensure your child has everything they need to take part in their swimming lessons. Try everything on to make sure it fits and they are comfortable;
  • sign your child up for additional lessons at a local pool if possible;
  • continue to swim outside school times even during the period that they are swimming with school.

The more they swim the better they will get. More information can be found here: https://www.swimming.org/schools/parents-and-pupils/

Telford & Wrekin Council will soon lose the funding which in previous years has meant that children in Years 4, 5, and 6 can swim with school for free. This money has covered the cost of using the pool, but does not cover the increasing cost of the transport needed.

We are currently reviewing our swimming curriculum and how we can move forward with the additional costs, including the pool hire and the transport to the Abraham Darby Leisure Centre by coach. From next September we will be offering blocks of swimming for Years 4 & 5 only. We will then offer intervention sessions for anyone in Year 6 who has not achieved the objectives above. How this will be organised is yet to be confirmed.

In the meantime, please see the link below which will direct you to Leisure Centres within Telford which offer extracurricular swimming lessons.

We will update you in due course once we have reviewed our current practice.

Many thanks for your support.

Ice Pops for sale this week

This Friday 24th May, some of the School Parliament members will be selling ice-pops at home time in order to raise money for Healthy Lifestyles Week. It will be 30p per ice-pop. Following feedback from last year’s event, we will have two stations. One station will be situated on the playground. The second station will be located by the Year 1 classrooms. Please be aware that we have limited freezer space in school and stock is therefore also limited. Please only buy the ice-pops you need so that everyone has a chance to buy one. If this proves popular, we will of course have further events like this. School Parliament would like to thank you for supporting this event.
