Year 1 Maths Activity – Tuesday 5th May

Hi everyone,

I LOVED seeing all of your creative ways of building numbers yesterday! Today, I have set a bit of a number investigation for you all. It involves building 2 digit numbers but using a slightly different method to the one you were using yesterday! 😎

Helpful Books for Younger Children

It can be quite challenging to explain to children (particularly younger children) about what is going on in the world at the moment. To help find the right words to explain why we need to wash our hands so frequently and the reasons why we are having to stay at home, here are two more fantastic books to help:

‘Staying at Home’ by Sally Nicholls (available as a free download by Anderson Press) https://www.andersenpress.co.uk/staying-home/

Here is the PDF version:  STAYING_HOME_ Sally Nicholls

Also helpful is ‘I Don’t Want to Wash My Hands’ by Tony Ross. You could order a copy online, but here is a link to the author reading his story aloud which you may find useful.

We hope you find them helpful.

VE Day Bunting

In preparation for the VE celebrations later this week, we created some celebratory bunting in school. The younger children decorated paper pennants whilst the older children used textiles and sewing to create theirs. I was so impressed by the resilience shown this afternoon as sewing can be really challenging. Ashleigh, Joe and Lola particularly impressed me.

Year 1 Home Schooling Tuesday 5th May 2020

Today for phonics, practise your spellings. You will be tested Thursday this week instead of Friday due to the VE day bank holiday. Keep watching Miss Hammond’s amazing videos as these will help you with your flashcards and revision.

Our little split digraph memory game on this PowerPoint might help you to remember your spelling rule for this week. Split Digraph matching pairs memory game powerpoint

For Literacy today, continuing with our Weather theme we would like you to have a go at writing your own Springtime poem to celebrate all the sunshine we have had lately! You might like to read some poems first for a bit of inspiration.

You can create your own on paper, or you may like to do it via PurpleMash on your 2do’s.

Finally, you should have received a text to ask you to keep hold of an empty plastic bottle for an upcoming activity! All will be revealed tomorrow.

Have a great day.

Year 1 Guided Reading – Monday 4th May

Hi Year 1,

Here is your first Guided Reading activity for the week. This lesson is all about ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar‘ – one of my favourite stories ever! After you have listened to the story and answered the questions, there are four activity ideas on the page below – please remember, you do not have to complete them all but can choose a couple of activities that suit you best! 🙂 📚

Year 1 Maths Activities – Monday 4th May

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a fun and enjoyable weekend! 🙂

This week, we are going to be practising counting and thinking about place value. We are going to have a go at a few different activities which will help to develop the children’s understanding of 2 digit numbers. As ever, if you have any questions about the activities, please don’t hesitate to contact us via the Year 1 email address!

Year 1 Home Learning Monday 4th May 2020

Hello Year 1.

This week in phonics and spellings, we are revising split digraphs. Remember, this is when a word has a ‘magic e’ at the end which is silent, but sprinkles it’s magic onto the medial vowel to change it’s sound to a ‘capital letter sound’.  Practise your spellings and then for fun, you may choose this split digraph wordsearch. Here is a paper copy you could print or copy: Split Digraph Wordsearch

Alternatively, here is a link to a website for the wordsearch electronically. Simply follow the link and select the split digraph a-e, o-e, I-e option: http://www.ictgames.com/hybrid.html

For Literacy today, we are learning about the Weather! Read the Weather PowerPoint attached for information: T-T-9655-Year-1-Seasons-Weather-Chart-Powerpoint

Then can you use or adapt the sheets attached to begin your very own weather diary? Record what kind of weather we have each day for a whole week. There are different level sheets depending how tricky you want it to be.

Average Challenge Easy

Finally on PurpleMash, there are some Weather activities for you to complete:

You can create your own weather chart using symbols or create your own weather picture with labels and sentences.

Our Year 1 Geography links perfectly to this, so remember to choose some of the fun tasks Mrs Evans has posted to the website for the afternoon. We cannot wait to see your pictures on the blog! Have fun Year 1.

Today is spelling test day! Please let mum or dad test you on this week’s jumping orange words and send your scores to Mrs Goodwin and Mrs Lee. Good luck.

It is our last day on ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We hope you have enjoyed this book. Can you tell us your views and opinions by completing a book review?
