Reception Message

Good evening,

You will have seen the update about the building work being completed on site at school currently. This work does mean that the outside play area of Reception has had to move many items out of the area whilst the work is being completed.

Please bear with us, and we will have the outside area back up to its usual standard as soon as we can. In the meantime, we will be making use of the immediate area outside our classrooms and bringing across the resources as we need them, as well as making use of the playground and jungle gym.

Welcome to Reception at Newdale!

Welcome to Reception!

We hope you had a lovely summer and we are really looking forward to welcoming you into school on Tuesday and seeing you in your smart new uniform. ☺️

Here is our information sheet again (attached) with reminders of staff, details of PE and Forest School days and a school map ready for the first week.

We would also like to remind you of our pupil booklet, which can be found below on our class page. It would be great to spend a little time ahead of Tuesday, looking through this with your child to help prepare them.

Enjoy the last couple of days.
The Reception Team.

Attendance Update

Dear Parents and Carers,                                                                                                           July 2024

RE: Attendance Update

From 19th August 2024, the Government have introduced a new ‘National Framework for Penalty Notices’. These will apply across Telford and Wrekin from 1st September 2024.

Whilst these changes are a few months away, I felt it was important to share the information we currently have available. Below are some of the significant changes you need to be aware of:

  • If your child has 10 sessions of unauthorised absence in a 10 school-week rolling period, you may be issued with a Penalty Notice. These 10 sessions may include any unauthorised absence, including leave in term time and do not have to be consecutive. Unauthorised absences are recorded for children who are late after the register has closed, do not provide medical evidence, or have not contacted school.
  • Penalty Notices are increasing to £160 from September 2024. This can be reduced to £80 but only for the first Penalty Notice issued, if paid within 21 days – this reduction does not apply to any subsequent Penalty Notice.
  • Any 2nd Penalty Notice, to the same parent for the same child, issued within three years of the date of the first Penalty Notice will be charged at a flat rate of £160.
  • A third Penalty Notice will not be issued within a three-year rolling period, to the same parent for the unauthorised absence of the same child, – alternative action or legal measures will be utilised for subsequent offences.
  • In some circumstances a ‘Notice to Improve’ may be issued. However, a Notice to Improve will only be used in cases where support is appropriate. They will not be issued in cases of unauthorised leave in term time for holidays; where information for parents is included on the school’s website; or a simple warning has been given by the school that a Penalty Notice could be issued for unauthorised leave in term time.
  • Absence for leave in term times will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances – please note that holidays or extended leave for family visits cannot be considered as exceptional circumstances. We will be updating our Attendance Policy to reflect this.

I totally understand the challenges of the costs of holidays during the school holidays and of having extended family who live abroad; however, the guidance from the DfE is clear that we cannot authorise these absences. As a school we will always consider exceptional circumstances that sit outside these reasons on a case-by-case basis. I also want to make you aware that there is a tightening of the guidelines around pupils arriving late. If pupils are consistently late this could contribute to their unauthorised absence levels and result in action being taken by the Local Authority. Maintaining a good level of attendance is not only essential for your child’s day to day learning but is also crucial in setting positive habits and mindsets for their future. If you need support with your child’s attendance, please come and talk to a member of our office or pastoral team.

Kind regards,

Miss R Cook

School Reports July 2024

End of year reports will be sent home with your child on Friday 12th July.   If an additional copy is required by a parent who does not live at the child’s home address, you must contact the school office on 387720 or email newdale.primary@taw.org.uk to make a request by no later than Wednesday 10th July.

Please ensure that you keep your copy of the report safe, especially if your child is in Year 5.  Some secondary schools (such as Thomas Telford) require a copy to be sent with the application for Year 7 places and we will be unable to make further copies for you once they have been archived.

Art Day in Reception

Next Friday is Art Day! Children can come dressed down in clothes you do not mind getting a little mucky, or they could come ‘dressed to express’ and have an art themed outfit.

In Reception, we are going to be collaborating to create a large joint piece of work and in line with the rest of the school the theme is about reusing materials.

To support with this we would appreciate if, over the next week, you could send in any of the following materials you may have finished with:

Cake cases
Foil wrappers e./g chocolate or cereal bars
Cereal boxes or similar
Plastic bags

Please can we only have these items if they are still relatively clean so they can be used to create a large collage.
If you bring them to class, we can take them off your hands and store them ready for Friday.

In addition to this, KS2 are still looking to have enough tetra packs to complete an activity on Art Day too, so if you have any then please do send them in. Tetra packs are cartons (see image) that you may use at home. It will say whether they are tetrapacks on the side of the carton. We are happy to take these and pass them on too.

Many thanks
The Reception Team :)

Penalty Notice Fines For School Attendance Is Changing

Please find below information which has been forwarded from the Telford & Wrekin attendance support team.

From August 19th 2024 the Government have introduced a new ‘national framework for Penalty Notices’. (in Telford & Wrekin the changes apply from 1st September 2024).

There are significant changes that parents need to be aware of:

  • If your child has 10 sessions of unauthorised absence in a 10 school week rolling period, you may be issued with a Penalty Notice. These 10 sessions may include any unauthorised absence, including leave in term time and do not have to be consecutive.
  • Penalty Notices are increasing to £160 from September 2024. This can be reduced to £80 but only for the first Penalty Notice issued, if paid within 21 days – this reduction does not apply to any subsequent Penalty Notice.
  • Any 2nd Penalty Notice, to the same parent for the same child, issued within three years of the date of the first Penalty Notice will be charged at a flat rate of £160
  • A third Penalty Notice will not be issued within a three year rolling period, to the same parent for the unauthorised absence of the same child, – alternative action or legal measures will be utilised for subsequent offences.
  • In some circumstances a ‘Notice to Improve’ may be issued – However, a Notice to Improve will only be used in cases where support is appropriate. They will not be issued in cases of unauthorised leave in term time for holidays, where information for parents is included on schools website or a simple warning by the school that a Penalty Notice could be issued if unauthorised leave in term time is taken will suffice.

‘Parents should always apply to the Headteacher for any request for leave in term time by completing a request form available from school.  (DfE guidance states schools should not authorise leave retrospectively so any leave in term time taken without a request being submitted will be unauthorised absence)’.

In developing and publishing the new national framework, the Government has renewed appeals to parents not to take their children out of school during term time.  The Governors and Headteacher of this school support this and students will only be given permission to take leave in term time if there are exceptional circumstances. The DfE Guidance Working Together to Improve School Attendance (Feb 2024) states that: Generally, the DfE does not consider the need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure and recreation to be an exceptional circumstance. (Paragraph 38.)

Each application for leave in term time will be considered and if it is agreed and authorised the Headteacher will determine the duration of any leave. However, if the application is not agreed and the absence occurs the dates will be unauthorised. Parents will be notified of any decision in writing. This notification may be hand delivered directly to the parent or posted to the parents’ home address.

As a school we are asked to inform you that in line with Telford and Wrekin Council Policy, if your child is absent for 10 school sessions within a 10 week rolling period and that absence is unauthorised, you may be subject to a Penalty Notice fine, criteria is as detailed above.
