Food waste

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are suffering ongoing issues with a few children who sneakily drop food under the tables at lunchtime.

Very often this food has hardly been touched e.g. whole apples and sandwiches.

Some children are throwing food under the table that has been supplied by home and other times it is food supplied by school.

It is really important to have conversations and better still get children involved in making their own packed lunches so that they have some control over what it is they will eat. Our teams try so hard to ensure that children are eating a good lunch so they have enough energy for their afternoon sessions.

I have asked our catering managers to come into school to see if they can do anything differently in order to prevent school food from being dropped on the floor.

We understand that some children are just so desperate to get outside to play that they rush their lunch. However, during assembly we will again be discussing the need to slow down and eat a good lunch.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Safer, Stronger Overdale

Dear parents/Carers,

Telford & Wrekin Council has launched a project to help residents feel safer in their homes and communities by reducing anti-social behaviour.

The Safer and Stronger Communities investment will address community priorities and create tangible measures to address them. The project also builds and supports both new and current initiatives, such as youth groups, community projects, activity and social groups and openings for volunteers to get involved.

In response to the Safer & Stronger questionnaire our school circulated, several concerns and suggestions have been addressed. Firstly, a new CCTV camera is being shortly installed which will monitor the Overdale MUGA and field area. The lighting on the MUGA has also now been repaired.

In regards activities for older children (11-16) several new free multi sports sessions will be offered during the summer school holidays – delivered in conjunction with AFC Telford. These free sessions will be on the 27th July, 8th August, 17th Aug and 31st Aug. All sessions will be from 3.30pm – 5.30pm.

The Safer, Stronger Communities team are officially launching in Overdale on the 25th June at the newly refurbished hall at the Carpenter Family Centre. They look forward to seeing you there.

Art Day- Friday 1st July

We are excited to be holding another whole school Art day next week, on Friday 1st July. The theme this year is ‘Art around the world’, whereby the children will create pieces of art centred on their classes chosen country and artist. They will be focussing on a particular art style and using a range of mediums including paints, printing, and drawing.

This year, we would love the children to ‘dress to express’ in their most creative clothing, but as you can imagine, this may get messy, so please send your child to school wearing old clothing, or a large t-shirt or apron to wear over these clothes!

It looks to be a very exciting day for everyone involved and we cannot wait to see what everyone creates!

Kind regards,

Mr McFarland

Sports Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are delighted to be able to run Sports Day again this year without the disruption of Covid. You will have already been given dates though our ‘Key Dates’ information, but I just want to remind everyone now of the dates again and relay some organisational points.

Year 5/6                     Monday 20th  June             1.15-3.00pm

Reception                Tuesday 21st June             9.00-10.20am

Year 3/4                     Tuesday 21st June             1.15-3:00pm

Year 1/2                     Wednesday 22nd June      1.15-3.00pm

We have a few reserve dates up our sleeve, but hope that the weather will be kind. We will update you if we have to pull on our reserve dates.

We are running the event in ‘Houses’. The children will run for either Wenlock, Ironbridge, Severn or Wrekin.

Children will undoubtedly tell you which house they are in.

The sports day will be carried out on the new Astro football pitch.  We will open the gate by Mrs Thomas’ classroom 10 minutes before each event starts. Children will be based on the side of the Astro that backs onto the Wrekin Way path. We ask parents to take up a spectator spot on the opposite side (where the Oak tree is) or up on the bank. Staff will direct you! Please make sure you use the toilet before coming to sports day, as we will not be able to offer toilet facilities to parents.

Due to the time the children will be outside, could you please ensure that your child has applied sun cream before coming to school and that they bring a hat with them.  Drinks will be provided for them at various stages but a water bottle on sports day is a must.

It is the first time we have run a sports day on the new Astro so please bear with us. Mr Birch, Miss Jones, and the team have worked hard in making sure it runs smoothly, with of course the main driver being that all children have fun!

Yours sincerely,

Miss Cook

Updates

9.6.22

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are really excited about all of the events we have on offer for the children this half term. Healthy Schools week runs from 13th June to the 17th June and will include all sorts of fun activities for the children including special guest visitors, bubble football and of course, our 1km a day runs!

Mrs Thomas and Mr McFarland have bravely decided to put on a Year 6 production of Peter Pan which we hope you will be able to come and enjoy. The children are already probably driving you potty learning lines and songs!

As well as the above activities please refer to the website to find out about other events we have scheduled like the Summer Fayre and Family Lunch. Many schools have not yet gone wholeheartedly into events like this since the huge impacts of Covid and we are very proud in confidently moving forward for our children.

The response we have had to the new official start time being 8.40 am has been really positive – thank you! We have been giving flexibility this week and will continue with this next week, as everyone gets used to the new system.

Dudley, our new bear stands very proudly looking over our school. He will soon lose the barrier tape around him. Please be aware that he was created by the clever use of chainsaws and hence he does have some rough edges and potential splinter threats. We will ensure children are aware of this as they play near him during school time, but need you to make sure you fully supervise children at the beginning and end of the day please.

We are a large school which is now at over full capacity with 500+ children attending. As a result of this full capacity, it does mean that the beginning and end of the day is very busy. Please can you ensure your children do not ride bikes or scooters on the school site, as there are simply too many people around (some with pushchairs) that are in danger of being hurt. We have noticed some younger children running off from parents to perhaps be first to push the pedestrian crossing button. We do ask that you keep full control of your children at these busy times of the day to avoid any accidents from happening. If you have a Blue disabled badge and have to drive onto the site at these busy times, please could you wait until the main flow of parents and children have departed before you move your vehicle (this usually only takes 5 minutes).

We have a school rule in that mobile phones cannot be used on site. This is linked to our safeguarding policy. You will be asked to turn it off immediately, if you are seen. Thankyou.

Recently some members of the Newdale team took part in the

Telford Council Charity Fun Run. We are a community school and

all staff embrace this title and join in where they can. Next year I

have been promised that many more staff will join in!

Look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at our forthcoming events…

Kind regards,

Miss Cook
